I'm trying to ID this plant that grows wild here. I think it might be Croton gladulosus but when I looked in the database, I got a little confused trying to compare photos. Tooth-Leaved Croton (Croton glandulosus)

Looking at our database there seem to be two distinctly different types in the photos for this entry. Very interesting.

There are supposed to be two glands visible at the base of the leaf as seen in this link; do you see those on your plant?

Hi Green. Thank you for your help. The distinct difference of the images in our database is what confused me.

I tried to look at the back of the leaves for glands but to be honest, I cannot see that well, even with my reading glasses it was a strain to try to see. The sun is glaring out there right now, so maybe if I wait till it goes down a bit I can see better. Or, if I can get a good close-up shot, it will show if there's a gland. I did noticed my stem is rough to the touch, sand-papery, which is not noted for this species.

Although, everything else about my plant appears to look like the one in the Missouriplants link.

Suggestion: When my eyes can't see I let the digital camera do the looking for me. Take several good shots in decent lighting, upload and view the full size images. It is amazing what the camera is able to see.

(Maybe I will take my own advice and go out back and give it a try with one of my Croton-type weeds to see what can be seen...)

Yep, I'll have to rely on the camera to see for me. I'll report back soon.

I was able to take photos of the Croton weed in my yard and mine do not have the glands. Isn't digital photography wonderful.

The base of the leaves of mine also have two glands, I didn't think at the time of taking more details, not knowing it would be such a tough one!
But in this poor crop you can distinct glands..

Hi Bonitin, you're right about this being a tough plant to ID. It really is interesting how plants can vary in looks, especially in the wild. Did you put the above picture in the database? Maybe it will be helpful for the next person who's trying to ID this plant.

I will put it in the database Christine, I even found photos from another day from the same plant species ( also with the glands) I will add too, there cannot be enough pictures for such a tough one!
But I'm still wondering if they can really vary that much that they look so different!

I know what you mean, Mariam. It is strange. Even the glands on your plant look different, they seem raised with a stem. My plant doesn't have a stem attached to the gland. I guess it won't hurt to have all the pictures in the database and if someone comes along and can identify them differently, then that would be great too?

The glands on one are kind of round, yellow and are on the back of the leaf. The glands on bonitin's look completely different and are visible on the front of the leaf. It could take months to look at all the possibilities since there are so many different Croton in the world and so many in South America; is it safe to say the identification of bonitin's is correct? Or should we be cautious and wait for more detailed photos. (A good reason to make another trip to Brazil. ) I saw a link that some new Croton types had been identified in Brazil...let me look for the link and get back.

I will not even pretend I can read all these words and descriptions, but it seems that there are some unusual and/or new varieties of Croton are being discovered in Brazil.

It's too hot for me to read these now but I'll try again later. I am hoping that bonitin's is a new, undiscovered variety and she will get to select the name. Perhaps Croton bonitinus, or C. bonitinicus. C. myriamii
