There is so many websites, I do not know where to start. I have heard of Naylors and Green Hills. What do you think of them? Any suggestions will be great.

Love Naylor Creek! They send beautiful plants. You can also check them out on the hosta library auction site. They sell there regularly.

Green Hills is Bob and Nancy Solberg's hosta farm. Bob is a noted hybridizer and was this years host of the AHS National Convention. You'd get good hosta from him.

The three nurseries where I buy hostas are Green Hill, Naylor Creek, and Savory Gardens. Never, never buy a hosta from any of the "big box" stores. There is too much risk of getting hosta nematodes or hosta virus x. From what I understand, once you have an infection of either, forget about growing hostas. Maybe I am exaggerating, but it is a risk I don't want to take!
Savory Gardens was started by Bob Savory, noted hybridizer whose best known hosta is probably 'Golden Tiara'. I have added several hostas recently hybridized by his son, Dennis, also a very talented hybridizer.

If I understand correctly, nematodes are not just on hostas, but brought into our gardens by several different plants. I'm guilty of purchasing companion plants at big box stores and small town nurseries. I've read that nematodes will not harm your plant or its growth. It will make the leaves look sick in the late summer, but won't kill the plants. Now HVX is a whole different story! I've had two plants infected with HVX in the past and destroyed them as soon as I saw it. I was fortunate that they were both still in pots waiting for that perfect spot in my gardens...turns out the perfect spot was the garbage can!

Well, it is September and I had better get my order in somewhere. I am wanting to revamp part of my sitting garden. It has a maple shade tree to the left and a old apple tree to the right. How close can I plant to the maple? Do I need to make a raised bed?
Now I have a couple hosta there a limelight and some sedums, tiger lilies where it get the most sun. I will really need to add compost because of the poor quality of soil there. Excited about making it look better for next season.

Maples are horrible to plant under. They tend to have a really dense root system that chokes everything out. You would have to put some sort of barrier down over the area you want to plant in and build a raised bed. I'm still not sure it would keep the maple in check.

Teresa, I recommend that you buy hostas from me. And I suggest that the best time to plant them is in May or June.

I'm surprised that nobody has mentioned Hallson Gardens. http://www.perennialnursery.co...

Chris, one of the owners, is one of the most knowledgeable people around when it comes to HVX. I've not been able to purchase from them as I live in Canada, but I've seen postings of the size of plant people have received and it's generous. BTW, Chris also runs a garden chat list which has a number of people who know a lot about hostas participating.
