And see the yellow stuff on the proboscis? That's pollen! Zebra Longwings eat pollen as well as nectar. They collect it on the proboscis, secrete an enzyme that breaks it down into liquid, and then they slurp it up. As a result of the added nutrition, they can live up to 9 months! It's also the state butterfly of Florida! Thumbs up

Thank you all very much. This is a complete surprise. What makes this banner special to me is that it shows the Zebra Heliconian (aka Longwings) all covered with pollen as well as nectaring on the Mexican Flame Vine. This is one of the few butterflies that actually eats pollen as well as nectar. The pollen interacts with a chemical in the body of the butterfly that makes the butterfly offensive to predators which also helps it to live up to 9 months. The dude needs a bib Hilarious! ; you might say he totally into his food.
Definitely one of my favorite butterflies. The host plant is Passiflora.

I would love to see the pre-cropped version to enjoy the longwings. Just a beautiful banner.

Happily i will send it to you Leslieray and Vickie. How do you think will be the best way? I will try sending it via Tree Mail. I wonder if a reduced version will show up? As it does on the forums? Well, i'll try and see how it works. Later this evening, i have to leave the house now Smiling

@vitrsna, you can just post it here in the thread by using the "upload an image" option below your reply. That's how most folks do it. Thanks!

@blue23rose, I posted it to the Forum "Gardening for Butterflies, Birds, and Bees" before i saw your note here. I made a separate thread "July 29 Banner Unbannered" or something like that, so you wouldn't have to go hunting for it. If i were to use the photo again, i would crop a close up on the entire Zebra Heliconian including the flowers and eliminate some of the background. Smiling
