Determining the Daylily Characteristics I Liked

Every daylily has a pretty face, and some daylilies have a lot more to offer besides the pretty face. Discovering what else I wanted in a daylily was a long journey.

You are so right about the importance of bud count and branching. I keep a few for the pretty faces, but the ones I really enjoy are the ones with lots of blooms. What ones do you find rebloom well for you? Not many do for me in zone 5.

Gerry,

While reading your list of desired characteristics, it was as if you were reading my mind! Tall, sturdy scapes, good branching, and high bud count are what I am looking for now after 10 years of collecting pretty faces. Thank you for a nice article and for the suggestions of good ones to buy!

I would like to suggest Hakuna Matata if you don't already have it. I was at a daylily farm (now closed) last year and even though I had spent more money than intended and was ready to leave, Hakuna Matata kept calling my name, lol! I am soooo glad that I got it.

The only thing about it that you may not get is the rebloom. FFO this year was 7/5 and it still has several blooms left on it 4 weeks later. I am thrilled with it.

May all your weeds be wildflowers. ~Author Unknown

Oh wow, am I ever glad I read this article... Thank You!

I have collected now for 2 years based on pretty faces. I know, I know I'm still a baby hemoraholic! Rolling on the floor laughing
But now I have something to base future selection on. I would add however that I will still collect a pretty face, but they all have pretty faces. I will just adjust its location based on where it fits into the landscape...

I'll have to take a new look at my "would like to have" list with all this in mind. No easy task as you noted. I've been browsing the data base for DL's and am up to the C's now. Just looking at the pretty faces. I'm glad to have read this. I think I may have the beginnings of a very bad addiction. At least now I can get the good stuff from the start. Thank for helping me out with that. I tip my hat to you.

Thanks for these thoughts. I have 41 varieties of daylilies, with no purchase criteria. I spent a few hours this week researching and compiling those varieties , that's a start. I need to cull more duplicates, give more space to the ones I keep. I don't plan to buy more before I get on top of this.
