A couple years ago I got a lovely coral pink P. paniculata from one of my favorite nurseries. The tag it had said 'Flame Coral'. Last year I thought it did not come back, but this year all of a sudden here it is blooming next to 'David'!

However, when going to upload my photo, I realized that it looks totally different from the other 'Flame Coral' photos, so I'm thinking now it must have been mislabeled?

I know that nursery also carries 'Cotton Candy' a lot, so I'm wondering if it might be that, with somehow the tag getting switched? Or maybe I should just file it under the parent P. paniculata, since we can't be sure at this point?

Hi Catmint, I would post a pic but have already cut them back for second show but I have a couple that are similar and they were tagged Flame series
and they look a lot like my fanick phlox

Gardening is learning, learning, learning. That's the fun of them.

I have several Flame Coral - the center dark spot is purple and not as pronounced, and the main color is very bright. Allowing for camera and lighting differences that might look more pink or more coral at times, I doubt this one is Coral Flame. It actually looks like Pink Flame to me. If it is, you will be happy with it -- the entire Flame series is an outstanding group of short phlox cultivars.
And maybe this is because it's late in the season, but I have found more mis-labeled plants around lately than I have ever seen before. Last weekend I saw a whole group of large dark-leaved sedum labeled as "Thundercloud." Not.

thanks, Stefan. It is definitely a dwarf variety and has bloomed in mid to late summer, so it fits the 'flame' description in the 'Perennials' link very well, and 'flame' is also what was on the tag. It just seems to be the color that was off, as it's much lighter than the 'coral' color. My guess is there were a couple different 'Flame' varieties sitting next to each other in the nursery, and maybe a tag got switched by accident somehow.

The photos in the 'perennials' link do not look much different for pink flame versus light pink flame!

I'll need to go out and look at it again and get another photo of it...

Sun Exposure Flower Colour
Full Sun Deep Pink
Partial Shade Light Pink

the intensity or color shade may also affect the composition of the soil, zona, elevation...(above sea level)

I did not realize that sun exposure affected the color of phlox, Stefan. Do you have a link to an article about that that I can read?

Cat, I was at a nursery last night and lo and behold they had Pink Flame in bloom there. (V8 moment, should have taken a picturevof it!) I thought it looked very much like yours. There is a separate Light Pink Flame cultivar that is, not surprisingly, lighter in color. I found a good listing of the Flame series from Skagit Gardens that included photos. I'm posting from my phone right now so I can't provide a link, but it would be easy to find.

you're right, Kabby, it does look like that one, too! I would hesitate, though, because that's not a variety I've ever seen at this particular nursery.
