What fertilizers does everyone use for growth, flowering, and seed production?

gargoyl52 - I use different fertilizers at different times ... liquid fertilizer like MiracleGro (not the bloom booster fertilizer), milorganite, alfalfa pellets mixed into the dirt around my daylilies, and worm compost (I have an active worm bin). Early spring and early fall are when I do my fertilizing. But I do tend to lightly sprinkle milorganite around my plants all summer off and on to keep the rodents and other critters out of my raised daylily beds. (They don't like the smell.)

Not sure if milorganite would be available in Canada or not. So a 20-20-20 miracle grow type fertilizer would be good?

Hmmmm ... I personally wouldn't use that.

Here is what is in Milorganite:

You can get Milorganite in Canada, at least Rona advertises it in Ontario (not sure if there's a store near you):

I was able to get it a few years ago at a local garden centre but haven't seen it there since. It's not complete though, but what your soil needs would depend on what it already has so a soil test would be the best idea. If you're thinking Miracle Gro then the all purpose 24-8-16 would normally be better than 20-20-20.

Thank you sooby. My soil is pretty hard clay here. Would think there isn't much goodness in it.

Typically clay holds more nutrients than other soil types but can be hard to work with, that's for sure. The best thing is to amend it with compost. We used to live near Lake Simcoe and had clay there. With some amendments courtesy of my horses, over a few years it turned into lovely easily workable fertile soil. A lot better than the sandy stuff I have here in Eastern Ontario.

Depends on the manure (I wouldn't use poultry manure for daylilies) and how much you need. I'm thinking you'd probably need, the first year, to add one or two inches as a top dressing or to work in so you'd need to calculate how many cu. ft. or metres you need. If it's a lot it may be worth asking at a local farm or equestrian centre if they can supply any. When we had horses and sheep we'd let people come and take what we didn't need.

I use a packaged Kow Manure from Home Depot. When planting I use it to amend the soil along with alfafa pellets and milorganite. I also top dress with the alfalfa pellets and milorganite as well. I give them a dose of liquid Miracle Gro twice a month.
