Found something made itself a home along the edge of my driveway during the night. Know it's not a plant, but does anyone know what it is? The hole is about 3/4" in diameter. Snake?

Thanks Greene. I found a photo online that looks exactly like mine and that is what it says it is. I found an article that says ammonia will kill them and is best put on after 10PM so will do tonight. It's right beside where my little dog sleeps in the front yard so am glad to know what it is before she got stung. Here is a video I found and will use the pump idea to get the ammonia in the hole.

Here is a photo of the hole that looks like mine. Thanks for steering me in the right direction. I would have rather had a nice snake.

Ammonia could alter the PH of your soil, be careful with that.

Your (or the dog's) chances of being stung by a cicada killer are close to zero. They are extremely docile, I've even had them ride around on my shoulder while out in the yard. The males make a show of "aggression", they're basically attracted to anything that moves, but they don't even have a stinger.

I think I may have had some experience with a ground wasps a few years ago. I had a raised flower bed and was sitting on it when dividing some daylilies and throwing them next to me as I divided them. All of a sudden I was swarmed with waspa and got about 5 stings. I just read that cicada ground wasps are passive stingers and only sting when they feel under attack. Guess a big person sitting beside their hole and throwing daylilies on top of it must have made them fell threatened. If these are the same type, I will say they can sting. I'm worried about my little 3 year old neighbor boy whose current favorite play activity is hitting the ground with a stick. I showed his parents where the hole is and told them to watch him, but think I will treat it anyway. The one a few years ago I sprayed with a high powered wasp killer spray and that seemed to work. Here is the information about the ammonia.

It does look like a Cicada killer wasp nest.

https://www.google.co.uk/searc...

I'm not going to suggest you try to kill it, if you do then you might not have any future predators of the cicadas. They will take the cicadas into their nest to use for food for their offspring.

Cicada killer females use their sting to paralyze their prey (cicadas) rather than to defend their nests; unlike most social wasps and bees, they do not attempt to sting unless handled roughly

Definitely a Cicada wasp. They are very big and scary if you see them and don't know what they are, but they are supper docile. You might even want to watch him for a while before you get rid of them. (There is only one.) They are industrious diggers and push the soil out backwards with their rear legs. They even have "feet"! (You can just make them out in my pic.)

There is no need for any kind of chemical. Just hit the hole with a hard stream of water for a bit. He will move on. If you google, you will find this recommended on several sites, and it works very well.

OK, I tried the water in the hole and then covered it with a rock. This must be different than the ones I got stung with a few years back.. They were a much smaller wasp or bee. Never saw one so large. Interesting looking.

Thanks again.

FYI, I'm sure you didn't hurt anything, but there is no need to cover (or with a rock). The purpose is not to drown or kill the insect. There is no call for that, and covering wouldn't kill it anyway. You are just proving (with the water) that this is not a good place to set up house, and encouraging it to go somewhere else. Since it is a new nest, there is nothing that will encourage it to come back.

When you spray during the day, you will usually see the wasp exit if he is in there. They usually just sit around for a while to gather their wits or dry off (or something) before they leave. He won't be mad.

Please reconsider harming them if they are Cicada killers.... they are harmless and will not attack. We have them in our yard and they just fly around you but have never tried to do anything... our dogs have even sniffed them without getting stung.

They look big and intimidating but they are just one of God's creatures .....

I just went out to my front yard and snapped these... the first is the "hole" they make and the second is one of the "killers"... there are about 8 or so flying around and I was within a foot of them... NO aggression whatsoever....

they sometimes hover around flowers in groups and at first sight, scarey, probably a defense , to look mean.
