Ehm, Ehm... soon I may be know as the serial plant killer ... but can someone tell me what the heck I could have done to this plant ... before I adopted it .. it was red and green and perky and beautiful ... now it's looking somewhat brown and yellow.. kind of like me when I have the stomach flu.

I'm not sure if I over watered or under watered or maybe it just doesn't like me.

It is coming to the end of its life, I think. Bromeliads will die after they bloom. They will usually make pups before they do.
That looks to be a Guzmania you have there.

I agree, your plant appears to be a Guzmania and it does appear to be at the end of it's life; nothing you did wrong, it's just the nature of the plant. Sometimes they produce small pups at the base of the mother plant that can be removed and potted up to grow on for another cycle.

Ohhhhhhhhh I see ... what a shame ... so this will dry up and I just chuck it? ... well that was a waste of time finding a red vase to complete the look .. I wanted the shoes to match the purse ... now the purse is brown and the shoes are red ... a fashion faux pas if I do say so myself.

It's sad, huh? But that is th-e way of the bromeliad. They bloom once, lasts for many weeks. Then the mother plants die a few weeks-months after. What a life! If you are lucky, mom will have 4-6 babies "Pups" and in 4 more years, sigh, yes I know a loo-oong wait, it might bloom for you the most lovely bloom again, lasting 3-6 weeks. Trust me it is worth the wait and the trouble and the patience it takes to grow one. BTW, pineapples grow this way, too. UP comes the pineapple, down goes momma plant. PS my hubbies first house/bed-room was decorated in dark brown and r-ed. Yes, agre-e. Fashion AND dec-orating faux pas!

Give the plant more time and you'll soon see the babies. I purposely look for Bromeliads on the clearance rack for about $1-3 with the intention of potting up the babies to give away at the local swap.

Oh, the only time brown and red go together in my house is on laundry day.
