I will be doing some yard renovations when money allow (which wont be soon though). Things I would like to add is a small grain mill with water wheel (fell in love with them when I did a trip to Missouri as a kid and saw a few). It would be located on a small stream (man maid) flowing into a pond. I would recirculate the water for the river flow and if possible use the water wheel to help generate some of the electricity for the pond pump. Also I would like to add a wishing well into the landscape.

What kinds of things would you add to your garden/yard non plant wise?

I'm pretty much at my limit with a bird bath and a few garden ornaments. I would love a waterfall of some kind, but it's not practical -- I have more than I can take care of with things as they are. Your plans sound wonderful.

At my previous home, we had a small fish pond (plastic with a pump and fountain ). We kept gold fish in there. I really enjoyed it.
Here we have a couple of bird baths and ornaments. That is plenty for us now.

I would add a garden statue of St. Francis (I used to be a Franciscan friar). That would make my Iris garden complete ! Smiling

I am always on the lookout for benches, old gates, pieces of wooden fencing and I use a lot of old wooden handled garden tools in my garden. I also have the usual bird baths and concrete frogs and turtles. I am adding the old garden tools to a fence so that is an ongoing project and I pick up galvanized buckets whenever I find them. I like them so much better than regular planters. I also add any old iron wheels I find.

So Patrick -- I don't think I know any other *used to be* friars. Did you retire?

I wouldn't think it would be at all difficult to find a statue of St. Francis -- if you're not fussy about the size...........???

Enjoys or suffers cold winters
I added a cast iron rabbit to the garden this spring. I had hoped if he was put in the center of the snow crocus patch I would know where they were when they went dorment. turns out this spring, most of them had dies so will have to plant some others. Never had crocus die before. Anyhow it is leaping out of the garden bed towards the lawn. No I don't have a photo ☺.

I always add a few ornaments and solar lights. DH picked me up a small tiki head a couple of weeks ago. I still haven't decided where to put it.

The waterwheel sounds great!

Celia, Its something I fell in love with as a kid for some reason and add in the water which is relaxing. Altogether, once its done I would think it would be a peaceful environment,

yes, I want to see it too. I do not have a water feature in my garden. It would be a snake habitat here. I have friends with ponds and falls and they are lovely. I love the sound of water in a garden and it does bring birds and wildlife.

Bonnie -- that's why we never dug a pond here on our farm. I don't need to be attracting snakes!!! Blinking

LOL, I'm sure there aren't to many people who have actually met or known a Franciscan friar, LOL,
No, I left the Order in 1981 after spending 8-years in the Order.

I did find a really nice statue of St. Francis at a local Supermarket, but they sold out early in the Summer season (Drats!), so I'm gonna have to wait till next year, coz that really is the statue I want for my garden.

I love metal art in the garden. especially if it is left to rust a bit. And if it has parts that move with a breeze it is really great. I like glass too. When the sun hits the glass even on a winters evening it just sings.
