Has anyone grown regale album from seed? I've had a seed pod ripening for about 2 months now. Just wondering if you need to dry the seeds and give a cool period before planting? What experiences anyone has had with this lillie.

I started a packet of (pre-dried) L. regale seeds about a month back, and the seedlings are just putting out their cotyledons now. They grew as immediate epigeal for me, with no cooling period.

Did you plant them outside or inside?

I started them inside, but moved them outside once cotyledons started appearing last week. I didn't want the heat outside (30+ Celsius) to fry the seedlings. It has cooled down to ~26 Celsius outdoors now.

Are you going to bring them indoors for the winter and keep growing them or let them winter outside or?

That's what I plan on doing. I'm going to force the seedlings through a cooling period from February to the end of March, and then move them outside to let them start growing again in April.

What are you going to do for cooling period then? And how do you force a cooling period? Just pit them in a garage gradually?

I'm going to move the seedlings into the warm end of an unheated, dim garage (~6 Celsius) for two weeks, then to the cool end of the garage (~4 Celsius) until the end of March. Once the seedlings start putting up leaves again, likely by the end of April, I will move them to a warm location with plenty of light.

This is going to be my first time forcing any plants into "dormancy", so I'm going to experiment as I go along. Usually, I would keep growing seedlings until it is warm enough outside to transplant. I've seen plenty of recommendations for a twelve-week cool period, but I don't think I've planned enough time for that. My bad!

So your forcing the dormancy just cause lillies need it?

Yes. I'm also going to keep a control group that I won't put through a cooling period to see if it makes any difference in how quickly the seedlings grow buds/flower.

I was told you could plant them right away and within 2 years they would flower outside.....
My Regale are full of seed pods.....
will plant them and the Album right into the ground and see what happens in the springtime
in nature that is what would normally happen
and since they are both species that grow up the mountain
and likely used to adverse situations in the wild
I am going to do it that way

the person that I bought the Regale from told me that last year they did not pull off the one seed pod and had little ones starting in the grass over the yard in the springtime..... and that is zone 3 that they are........
they must reseed pretty easy as well.............I have lots of pods on my Regale and Album here.........

there is some state in the US that they are considered invasive.......
a lot of the seeds in the pod germinate and have a high success rate

someone on here might have a better idea
they do need a cold period though as well

Invasive? That's odd. But to each their own I guess.

What do the seeds look like?

Most of the pod will have seeds in them for sure.......they have a high success rate........
apparently if you hold them under a light you can see them..........
mine are still green green and not ready to come off of yet.......

Ok, so 43 of the 60 Regale Album I planted have come up. Excited as this is my first lily seeds if started growing. Now, when should I fertilize? When they have a couple sets of leaves??

not sure any should be right now with the winter coming up.......
I would just mulch them well
are they outdoors or indoors??
I know they will self seed themselves in the grass even if the seeds blow..........
They are very fast and healthy grower as far as I can see anyhow.......

Gargoyl, congrats on the seedlings! I suggest reading the stickies thread about starting lilies from seeds at the top of the forum. I always wait a little bit to fertilize and even then I go with a very dilute amount.
