I have several epis, but most are cuttings that have yet to bloom. The one that I have that is my oldest plant and blooms reliably is E. oxypetalum. I walked out on the porch tonight to let my dog out for a potty break and the fragrance about knocked me over! I knew right away what it was and saw those big bold white blooms! I wished I could bottle up that scent because it is divine to my nose!

(Not yet...but maybe in a few years. I was so inspired last winter that I bought a few cuttings. The new kittens thought they were fun to play with one night , but they are out of harms way now and I only lost one, so I have my fingers crossed for future joy)

Is yours the same species as the one that I posted above or a different cultivar?

I have a red one that blooms in the Spring. I lost the one you have blooming. I do have one that has three buds should bloom in a week. I do not know what color it is I purchased it on sale from my local nursery as a noid on sale

also El Mira Paetz and Young Nun and a couple other flashy, gaudy ones whose names I cannot remember at the moment

Oh, I'm envious! I have one like yours, but it is still very young. I took cuttings from a neighbor's plant last year. It is growing well, so I hope to get to post a photo one day. Do you know how old they need to be to bloom? Also, is there anything special I need to do to get it to bloom?

I hope y'all will post some photos when they bloom!

Kelli - Did you take any photos?

Mine bloom off and on here. I guess they like the humidity of Florida. I know you are pretty dry out there in CA right now.

I took photos. I'll see what I can dig up. Nothing has been organized since 2013.

I have about 5-6 more epi cultivars that haven't ever bloomed for me. (Well maybe one or two of the older ones have, but the newest ones need a lot of growth before I can ever expect blooms.

I remember way back when--before I had even heard of 'epies', long before I ever saw the flowers, I always saw these massive, gnarly, weirdo-looking-tough-as-nails-beatup-and-scarred-and-yet-somehow-resilient cactus type things flopping all over in the strangest places--like all over the front entrance of some random coffee/breakfast place--in my travels. I always wondered why there were so many of those things hogging up all the space and only a few single specimens of plants that I recognized, like a Jade or a Croton
It took me a looooong time to put it together
and then @rocklady pushed me right over the abyss with her banner and stories and pictures (thanks Jean )

@dirtdorphins You are welcome, Dirt. I certainly hope your cuttings survive, but it takes a lot to kill one so I think it is safe to say that one day you will be enjoying blooms, too.

@beckygardener You are right. If we could figure out a way to bottle up that epi oxy fragrance we could make a fortune! That fragrance is hard to describe but once you've experienced it, it's hard to forget.

That is a lovely bloom Becky! I also love epis, adopted them from Sue a few years ago. I usually get my blooms here in my area during Spring and sometimes early Summer. It is hit and miss in my area, just depends how hot it goes I guess. In my very dry area, got to step up watering to help it.

This one is Epi 'Newport' which I got from a garden show in 2011, I grew it first indoors by our west facing window and was rather slow, then I decided to bring it out and it responded much better, finally blooming in May 2013. It taught me a lot of what epis needed, more light and more water in our dry area

Thank you for your compliments. Like Dirtdorphins alluded to, I keep the kind of scraggly plants around all year for the wonderful flowers. I saw a quote that said something like, 'Epiphyllums are what other flowers wish they were.'

Great to find other folks interested in Epi's. I'm trying to get a forum for just Epis so we need as many folks as possible interested.
I've been hooked for about 8 years. Obsessed is a better word. Just a hobby but have about 700 pots and maybe 70 different varieties. Not all have bloomed yet. Had about 800 blooms this year. Currently waiting for about 12 Strictum buds to open and quite a number of Queen of the Night. Flowering season is amost finished but now thinking about cleaning up the plants and taking more cuttings. New greenhouse going up in the next week or so.
