Hi everyone!I'm curious about nocturnal DLs. When do the flowers open? How long do they stay open? I mean, if I sleep at night , will I ever be able to see what a nocturnal DL is doing? many thanks!

One of Pat Cochenour's cultivars, LITTLE LEMON TWIST, is a prime example of a nocturnal, although she did not register it that way. I got it from her when it first came out. The next year, when it began blooming, it took me at least the first week (I live head each evening) of removing blooms to realize that-DUH!!- I was removing the old as well as most of the NEW blooms. The new blooms are fully open by at least 6 PM each evening. I still have to remind myself to be very careful to only remove old blooms. At 8 PM each evening, you must look carefully to see any difference. The old blooms re starting to look thin and wilted. Because the blooms are small, I still goof every so often!! I spoke to Pat about this before she died, but by then she was too ill to do anything about changing the registration data.

That first sentence of your post would make a great comment to add to the database under 'Little Lemon Twist".

I've done the same thing live heading Notify Ground Crew! Planet Claire and The Levitating Ananuki are two other registered nocturnals I grow, but the blooms don't seem to begin opening as early in the evening as NGC making it easier to not mistake tomorrows opening blooms from the ones ending today.
I really like the nocturnal bloomers. The ones I've grown open well, even when the mornings are cold (CMO - Cold Morning Opener), and remain open into the evening.

My only issue with the nocturnal Daylilies is the slugs and snails will often eat on the blooms overnight. Of course they like to eat on some of the buds before they open too. So either way, they ruin the bloom. Some plants seem to be more of a magnet for them than others I find. Some, they don't bother at all.

Joy - Just curious ... do you happen to remember any cultivars that seemed to escape slug attacks? I am asking because maybe some cultivars are slug resistant for some reason.

Sorry, I don't. But it sounds like this could be useful info for others, so I'll try to pay more attention to that next year. Just have a very few blooming now. Some very late season and a rebloom on a seedling.

I have a repellent for slugs and with all the heat we're having this year I barely seen some in the spring. They never made much damage to my DLs.
I really don't know if I want a nocturnal or not can't decide on this.

Took this image of a nocturnal bloom beginning to open on The Levitating Ananuki about an hour ago. This will open sometime overnight.

Some stay open for 16 hours!!!! I think that is an asset to have in a plant!

Yes, you can! I just searched the database, there's a flag regarding blooming. I found Citrina is nocturnal and has extended rebloom. And maybe I can get it here easily!

I think Sabrina means the ATP database rather than the AHS one. The ATP search for daylilies is here and there's a check box for nocturnal:

To search for nocturnal in the AHS database you have to use the search box on the home page rather than the database search:
http://www.daylilies.org/

You have to sift through the AHS results, the database entries will say AHS Daylily Cultivar and then the nocturnal cultivar's name. There is an easier way of searching the AHS Database using Google and only getting database results but it's a bit more complicated. Go to Google Advanced Search:

and enter nocturnal, then under site or domain enter: http://www.daylilies.org/Dayli... and that should search only the AHS database for characteristics that are entered but not in their own advanced search capability. Sounds more complicated than it is

Sorry, the color is off because of the spotlight. We had a skunk outside the night before, smelled him through our open windows. I was very glad to have not run into him on my journey!
