I have been growing daylilies about 10 yrs now. It has been a fun ride. I started with Stella de Ore like many others. I still have many clumps of her plus now over 240 others.

My first purchase was a NOID from a little ole lady that has passed on. It is my favorite late yellow.

Bonanza was also from a elderly neighbor, my first named one.

Custard Candy is a classic and one I will alway keep. A bit short but nice in the front of the bed.
Road to Samarkand was my first purple. I can remember when I didn't know they came in purple!

Prior to building this house in 1992, I had many gardens, but only had the old fashioned orange, yellow and bronzy red unnamed daylilies. I was more into iris at my previous garden.

When we moved here the iris grower, had a section of daylilies in their catalogue, so I decided to order a few named varieties of daylily when I put in my iris order. The first order was four plants. They were Darius, Red Fountain, Cape Cod and Shadyside. I still have all four, although Cape Cod has been lost in a shady area of the property. We did some tree thinning and there is more sun there now, and if the daylily clumps growing in that area bloom, I hope to be able to find Cape Cod.

The next order the following year was for some "pinkish" cultivars. At that time most of the pinks available were more peach than pink. That order was for Sea Gold, Date Book, Close Up and Green Glade. Green Glade was sold out and they substituted Doll House. They added a gift of Radiant Greetings.

I still have all of these varieties in my garden beds, except for Radiant Greetings. It didn't fit my colour schemes and I put it in a plant sale.

I still enjoy those original cultivars!

I still grow most of my original starter plants. Many were Stout winner or Award winners that always helps

Fires of Fuji & Prairie Blue Eyes were the first 2 I bought at our old house. Do not have either here.

After moving here I ordered James Marsh, Sir Modred, Omuki(sp), South Seas, Garden Symphony & Apricot Serenade. I still have all except Omuki & James Marsh. I just took JM out this summer.

My first daylilies I found at a local growers outlet, they were Prairie Blue Eyes and Purple D'Oro. I soon joined a daylily club, and acquired Orange Velvet, Mary's Gold, Barbara Mitchell, and Raspberry Candy. I don't have the original 2 anymore, but Orange Velvet, Mary's Gold, and Raspberry Candy are still on my list of favorites, and I hope to always keep them. Barbara Mitchell now resides at my parent's house, just 3 miles away, so I get to visit her often.

Jessie, that is funny. I have Big Kiss at my Mom's. I gave it to her for a bday gift. I would love to see Orange Velvet in person. I have heard good reports on that one. I also grow Mary's Gold and B. Mitchell. They are classics to me

I really got into Daylilies 9 years ago. I have been a plant collector for 30 years and used to do a lot of trading. My fist Daylily was an unknown yellow that I still grow. It came to me in a plant trade. The next Daylily I got , also from a plant trade, and my first named, was Crimson pirate. When CP settled in and started showing me what it could do, I fell in love with it's spidery velvet blooms and decided I needed more Daylilies, so started trading more of my perennials for Daylilies. I ended up having 169 named cultivars all from trades before I had made my first Daylily purchase. Some of the other first ones I received are Amplified, Always Afternoon,Catherine Woodbery and Merle Kent. The first Daylily I ever bought was Chicago Blackout. I still grow all of these except for Amplified, which I lost to one real harsh, dry cold winter. It was growing in a pot.

My first was Stella, had it for years before I realized that there were Daylilies other than Stella and the orange Ditch Lily. I saw a small purple bloom at Lowes in 2012, I believe. I still have it, don't know its name. My eyes were opened by doing a google search for Daylilies, I was in awe. Now I have over 125 Named, a few NOIDs, and around a couple hundred seedlings.

I got a box full of ditch lilies for postage from someone who had them in an area of their property and were spreading. I was thinking I would get .... you know ... a couple of fans. No! The box was full. I don't even know how many ... I'd estimate at least 20! The Spring after I got them, they bloomed up a storm. I had the Kwanso and the single bloom fulva ditchlily, so I had 2 different ones. They were beautiful ! Unfortunately, they only survived here a couple of years before they completely died off. I had them planted in two different areas and they died in both full sun and partial afternoon sun locations. The annuals and perennials around them did fine, so I have no idea why they didn't survive here. After that I received seeds from Sandi and grew them out ... not thinking much about them. Well, after they started blooming, I got interested REAL QUICK! They commanded my absolute attention! I have between 300-400 different seedlings. The past 12 months is the first time I've acquired named and registered daylilies. And I will shortly have a total of 35 named cultivars! Now I need to created more raised beds for all these beauties! I am a daylily addict.

Well Stella of coarse followed by mark downs at the plant center and they were Razzmataz,Pardon Me,Pandora's Box,Siloam Bi Lo,Siloam Tee Tiny.
While moving into our present house we bought 2 pots of Mango Time and lost the tags. Five years later i found out what they were at the local garden when i recognized them.
I still have most of these. When i started buying from local growers 10 years ago i got........

I just added Mathew Martin and Beyond Thunderdome this year. I have never had many of the small daylilies but I do like a few of the Siloams. They look nice in the right spots.

I really got educated when I found the gardening forums lol. I was on Garden web and Dave's Garden in the beginning.

Unfortunately just about all of our original plants were left behind. I still remember them although. First was one that my wife purchased at a club flower sale, "benchmark", this was followed by the ever present Stella. My first and only spider, "Red Ribbons" was next.
We belong to the Tower Hill Botanical Society in Mass. and was totally hooked when they had their annual daylily show.
I must say that it is fun starting over with new beds and plants.

Now, I mull over the stats of a daylily and other plants. I ck the height, budcount, I rarely plant Evergreens unless it is most try. In the beginning if I like the bloom I would try adding it. Sometimes a pretty face is not enough. I like the ones with the whole pkg!

My sister gave me Sammy Russell and 'Catherine Woodbery' which turned out to be Pink Damask! I still have PD but SR (now known in the family as Spammy Russell) just spread itself everywhere so it was given to a neighbour. I bought Crimson Pirate and Strawberry Candy at a local garden centre and still have them, they are classics. I found daylilies advertised on eBay and splashed out on Rocket Booster and Watchyl Lavender Blue. The seller became a good friend and we have done a lot of plant swapping with the result that I now have almost 200 named plants and around 150 seedlings grown from seed bought on LA. So you see I am a daylily addict too

My first was Stella. I was very impressed with how easy it was to divide it and make more plants. Over time I had 6 big clumps that I sold for $10 each at a garage sale. The buyer even dug them up herself. Don't have any now.

Then I got a box of what I think were seedlings from Wayside Gardens. A large red one, a peach one and a yellow one I divided and gave to a number of people. One of the yellows and one red is still growing in my neigbor's yard. None in mine.

Then I got my first fancy ones, Siloam Baby Talk and Praire blue Eyes. At one time I have a row of Siloam Baby Talk all alone one side of my house. Maybe 30. I was obsessed with dividing and multipling. All gone now.

Then I joined the daylily forum on Daves Garden and discovered a whole new world of beauties I could never have imagined. It's been an addiction now for over 20 years. Trying to cut down, but somehow a few new ones sneak in each year.

I also began with Stella, then I got Howdy, Prairie Blue Eyes, Black Plush, Surprisingly Pink , Glacier Sunset and Best of Friends. I still have them all except Surprisingly Pink.

Blk Plush was not a starter plant here but very early on. I still grow that one!

My first 4 daylilies ever came from Wayside Gardens back when they bragged about the quality of their daylilies. I can still see the pictures they used in their catalog of their generous root systems compared to others. I wonder what they send now days........Of the 4 I still have 3. They were PARDON ME (pitched it as I didn't like the dull brick red color). Those that remain with me are: HAPPY RETURNS, WAYSIDE GUPPY GUMS (love the name) and PANDORA'S BOX (still a first rate landscaping daylily). These have got to be going on 25 years old now. Boy, that takes me back.......Maryl

Wayside Guppy Gums. Named after the color of a guppy's mouth - the name makes me smile......
