In the spring, I am thinking of try to cross ( I guess the term would be hybridizating). I have seen a link or two I think k on here for videos. The question is when they do have a new one, how do they name. Is it a cross between the two contributing irises or is it something that is just made? Thanks everyone.

I think most hybridizers try to pick a name that is somewhat descriptive of the flower......for instance, you wouldn't call a bright yellow self "Midnight At The Oasis". And, I have seen some named to "honor" the parent plants....i.e. "Vanity's Child". That said, there are tons that have been named for states, cities, people, songs, movies....whatever.

Sorry Richard -- I can't help you. The last thing in the world I need to do is start creating Irises -- I don't have room for all the ones that I've already got!!! Hilarious! Hilarious! Hilarious!

No problem Mary Ann. It's something I would like to try once. I have ideas of what I would call it though.

I'm not much help. I have done some of my own hybridizing. I did it just to try. I had a bit of luck. I keep one really good one and gave the rest away.( of like 120 seedlings) I have no intentions of introducing it. I just wanted to try. It's just special to me and my garden and it's something I created and am proud of. Other then that I respect everyone that does hybridizing for a living, it's a long road of waiting for that perfect one.
Here is a picture of mine, I call it Jen's joy. It's is in a few other friends gardens.

There is no reason for a name unless it is outstanding. Plenty of my seedlings are still under number. Why spend $15 to register unless it is outstanding compared to others of the same type. Of course if you want a 'pet' you can call it something, like the lovely photo above.

Celta and Linnea I will put you ladies on the list for next year! It's going to need to be split again. I have rhizomes on top of rhizomes and I just split the thing last year! It's definitely a good grower. Lol. And thank you for all your comments. I will say I was lucky with this one. The others were not as special. And I honestly didn't have a clue what I was doing just took 2 I thought would make and interesting combo. And I lucked out. With that being said I have an udder most respect for people that do hybridizing for a living. Your patience level is much higher then mine!
