This stuff was pretty hard and wouldn't scrape off easy.

Hi Tia Welcome! Welcome to ATP.

I am not certain, but it looks like an infestation of Scale. Here is a link from UCDavis with pics and info.

Hi Tia, Welcome! from me too!

If those insects aren't scale, they might be Mealybugs: http://entnemdept.ufl.edu/crea...

Hm, I'd need to look closer but my first thought was 'it's putting out roots'.. Since the last picture looks like some type of jasmine vine, that's a possibility.

Tia, you might want to lay that cutting with the white stuff on it down on some damp soil and see if those things grow, or if they suck the life out of the cutting and then everybody dies. If they grow, they are roots or tendrils for grabbing onto the trellis. If the whole thing dies, it's insects. You could also try scraping a couple off with your thumbnail and see what happens.

I'd look at them closely, if you have a magnifying glass, use that. You'll be able to tell a lot more about them.

Hey Lin, first thoughts were aphids and mealy bugs until I read Tia's last line saying " This stuff was pretty hard and wouldn't scrape off easy".. seems either of those pests would be fairly easy to remove. Shrug!

Elaine, I think you are much closer to the ID than I was. The last picture, at the very top of the "stuff" looks very much like the start of a new root.

Rolling on the floor laughing I missed Tia's last line about it being hard ... definitely not mealies and if indeed insects, must be scale!

Elaine, my first thought before enlarging the photo's was adventitious roots too but then when I enlarged a couple of pictures and stared at them I thought it looked more like insects .. my eyesight is the pits! Blinking They could very well be adventitious roots, check out this photo:

Some soap and alcohol would probably kill enough bugs to at least diagnose the problem.

I had things that LOOKED like that on a Brassica, but they could be scraped off easily. They WERE bugs, and they crawled to the tops of the branches.

Thanks! That's how we all learn easiest, from other people's experiences.
