I had never seen one like them either (had four). I believe the ancestor was brought over from Hawaii by my parents around 45 years ago; but this is the first time the fruits turned out like these. I wonder if it is because I cut up a large apple and sprinkled the pieces among the leaves.

Bubbles, thank you very much for the gift! Smiling

Gigi, hubby harvested them a couple of weeks ago, but I forgot to tell him I needed pictures before he pulled off the crowns! Sighing! We've got another fruit coming along but so far showing only one crown.

Hi, James! I have no idea as to variety of this pineapple. I had indicated earlier that my parents brought the pineapple from Hawaii 45 years ago. And I'm sorry but I do not have the wherewithal to mail pups out of here. Incidentally, this is the first time the pineapple plants produced these multiple crowns. I think it did this because I had tossed in ripe apple chunks among the leaves as an experiment. Ethylene gas from ripe apples will induce inflo when the plant is mature enough.

If it came from Hawai'i it is likely Ananas comosus 'Smooth Cayenne'. The most planted variety of Pineapple, especially half a century ago.

Oops! I just looked at a close-up of the photo, and it clearly shows sharply toothed margins, meaning it can't be 'Smooth Cayenne' as it has entire (smooth) margins.

Since from Hawai'i, maybe 'Cayenne'. But not 'Smooth Cayenne'.

Thank you, Paul. Oh well...to me it's an heirloom and hope that my brothers, sisters, and our kids will pass them on.
We harvested a few more last week and this one has been in the fridge this past week. I think we'll have it for dessert after pizza. Hilarious!

In the past 'Cayenne' was the main Pineapple planted in Hawai'i, until 'Smooth Cayenne' came along, which replaced the fields as it lacked sharply toothed leaves. This was easier on the workers.

Glad you are having Pineapple after Pizza, rather than on Pizza. I don't know who decided to call Pineapple on Pizza, Hawaiian, but it is not.

You can cut the pups off and replant them once they're about a third the size of the mother plant. That's really a lot of pups, spectacular looking.
