Welcome to the start of the blooming of the Southern Hemisphere where, we of the other side of the world, show that daylilies never sleep. Always they are flowering somewhere.

My first has flowered today on the last day of August. Winter went straight into summer here - and we still have "spring" to come next month. The earth seems to have gotten absent-minded in the subtropics of Australia.

Hemerocallis lilioasphodelus

It is lovely to see your daylily, Glen. We call that one lemon lilies here, and they bloom prolifically around old farmsteads in the spring. Always a lovely sight. It is always amazing to see the old gardens ... daylilies, peonies, iris and lilac, still blooming after years and years of neglect.

Yes, they are. I have two, Monty (7 years) and Wylie (11 years). I had three, but sadly, Cody passed away in March of this year.

It is good to be back with you!!!!

Some more Lemon Lilies for you @touchofsky.
It flowered first in previous seasons on:
9/09/2014 13/09/2013 4/09/2012

I find daylilies around old homesteads and ruins of houses here too. Usually just a few leaves in mown grass. All have grown to be some hybrid noid but not any species. Kwanzo was one of the finds. My two fans of it have reshooted at the end of this winter quite vigorously and multiplied several times. Lol. It should be a good for many flowers this year. Some of the noids are quite handsome.

The first flower of Dalriada today. It hasn't opened properly as occurs with many first blooms of clumps. The subsequent ones will be a handsome yellow by the late Brisbane breeder, Nunan (1998). Last season its first flowered on 8/9/2014.

Thumb of 2015-09-04/Gleni/ceb9f6

Both these taxa are consistent early bloomers

Thank you for the lemon lilies Smiling A nice reminder of Spring. I just noticed your hardiness zone is 12a. From looking at a hardiness zone map of Australia, I would assume that you never get freezing temperatures. I am terribly ignorant of the growing conditions in your part of the world!

Yes. Lots of bud Ann. I am going to have a morning tea for the library and neighbours in the yard for the blooms on 22 October. Fingers crossed I have picked a good time for their blooming.

@touchofsky, we rarely get close to freezing. I would be dead if it did. I cannot endure cold.

Ann, it is a baby Glossy Black-Cockatoo. The species is endangered but we see it now and again on the island. This one is up 60 feet in a tree hollow and fledged on 18 August last.

30/10/15 Old avatar photo of baby Glossy Black-Cockatoo added below because of change in avatar.

It sure is a spectacular shot Glen. That baby looks pretty big. I hope they can rebound in numbers.
