I first thought a barrel cactus but the flower buds don't seem to match..

I have a similar one which luckily survived the winter in the greenhouse, being warmer in there than the house over spring and summer it had it's first flower this year. The flower bud looked much like this, the plant is similar too. The label in the pot says Gymnocal, so I guess it's Gymnocalycium. The flower was huge and scented but only lasted a day, I had brought it inside to capture it.

Echinopsis oxygona does look very similar! The difference I can see is that the ridges are not indented like the ones we have, the spines on Myriam's example are in those indentations, mine doesn't have large spines but both have indentations.

Good points but I think that Gymnocalycium have there cluster of spines on the tips of the tubercules and not in an indetation on a rib. Echinopsis oxygona is highly variable and much hybridized. The number of ribs and spines should give a clue....just my thoughts. I tip my hat to you.

Good point, or not on points. Hilarious!

I counted the ribs on mine, it has 15 with a few joining at the bottom. It doesn't have spines as such, more like a tuft of fluff which get bigger near the top. I can see maybe one tiny spine on lower, smaller tufts. I've had this cactus for maybe 15 years, bought as a young plant.

I've counted 13 or 14 ribs on Myriam's.

I found Echinopsis comarapana which has spines in the indentations, but it has 10-12 ribs. Maybe a cross with that?

I found a key for Echinopsis! Page 249

https://books.google.co.uk/boo...

I 'think' I got to #18b but 18a (Echinopsis obrepanda) fits better even though it mentions 'spines curved', the small tufts could be curved on mine? I found a photo which looks like it.

I tried to key Myriam's but can't do it.

Echinopsis rojasii var. albiflora is a synonym of Echinopsis obrepanda. Rolling my eyes.

This site has it with and without long spines ..

Wow, lots of research being done! It is a tough one, so many look-a-likes.
Amazing Janet how yours survived the winter in your greenhouse!
The flowerbud on yours does look like mine, just more elongated. What a huge flower in relation to the cactus body! Beautiful and nice capture too, white flowers are difficult.
The photo from this link (Echinopsis obrepanda)
https://www.google.co.uk/searc...
really looks like a perfect match to me!
Thank You! Janet and Leslieray!

Have you looked at Echinopsis calochlora...? To me that seems like a better match for the plants in the OP than E. obrepanda.
It is what it is!

Echinopsis calochlora..
Ah I found one that looks exactly like mine on wiki
https://www.google.be/search?q...
https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/...

I also think now this is a better match..I'll propose it to be moved to the right entry.
Thank You! Thijs! Thumbs up
