Scarlet Rose Mallow and One Dark Night

By Sharon
September 1, 2015

It started like this: She leaned over with her hand cupped around her mouth, and with her soft low voice against my ear, she whispered: "Wear yore darkest clothes, chile, an' meet me right here jus' 'fore dark. We're gonna git some rose maller seeds." "Aunt Bett, marshmalla seeds? Marshmallas don't . . . " That hand clamped itself over my mouth before I could say another word or even take a breath. Her next whisper was a little louder: "Hush yore mouth, chile, ya cain't grab seeds if ya cain't keep quiet!" The night got worse before it got better.

Sharon, your stories just keep getting better and better with each new installment. In my mind I was transported back several decades and pictured the hills and forests of rural Kentucky. I particularly liked the description of your mindset regarding the shotgun subplot. Tale was both amusing and informational.
Nothing that's been done can ever be changed.

Thank you, J,

Sometimes I think Aunt Bett delighted in drama and trickery, just to be sure I never forgot what she was teaching. At the time I didn't usually think it was a bit funny.

You would have loved it there and then, J. Not so much now. The mountain I usually climbed is still there, untouched, but the people, well, not so much. But I'll tell you, I wouldn't trade the memories made there for anything. It was the best place in the best time for this kind of learnin'! Smiling

Always a treat! Reminds me of the Hardy Boys & Nancy Drew mystery books of years gone by: Not the TV series of the 80's & 90's, but the original books! There was always an air of suspense and a good outcome. And in this case memories were made "for this kind of learnin'!" And I enjoyed every word: Couldn't stop until I finished! Thumbs up

Sharon, you always have many memorable tales to share; I so enjoy reading them. Your aunties are so delightful...such teachers...wish we had more people like them passing on their knowledge to youngsters.

Love your stories Sharon. Lovey dubby They take me back to my childhood and some of the lessons I learned.
Any day you wake up on the sunny side of the grass is a good day.

Our family teachers had a unique teaching method, didn't they, Jean? I didn't even know I was being taught, didn't know I was learning, at the time. I always thought I was just going on another adventure. Smiling
Thanks!
