What do you sow in the fall?
I am sowing Phlox divaricata soon.
I am wondering what else can be sown now?---in colder climates?

Caroline, do you sow the phlox for early spring growth? (or to start growing as soon as you sow it?)

The only things I sow this time of year are some greens (corn salad, lettuce, chard) in my hoop house, which will start growing now and then pretty much die back over the course of the winter and start back up again in the spring. And my garlic, of course Smiling

I've known people that planted some things like peas in the late fall, but it seems like the timing is pretty tricky...

The phlox needs a cold--warm--cold--- oscillating temperatures.
I have not had much luck with fall sowing.
I think I am better to wait until
March, and sow seeds that need stratification then.
My winter sowing is usually done then.
Over the bulb plantings I scatter For -get-me -not seeds and
Siberian wallflower seeds.
Calendula, Sweet William and Iceland poppies sometimes work from a later fall sowing.

I will try the lettuce along with garlic. Would be interested if the phlox would work here winter sown as well. I have three hoop raised beds. Another would be spinach. It is slower to grow here. How about kale? Anything to get a jump on spring.

Kale and spinach will over winter under a cold frame. Insulate around the frame with leaves.

Okay. I am nearly out of time for this. The ground is so soggy with all the rain. And I still need to plant my garlic. Hope it doesn't rot.

Mary, bummer about all the rain -- our fall is often very wet and it really does make getting the garden cleaned up difficult, to say nothing of getting the garlic planted! I'm thankful to have had drier-than-usual weather this year, and put all of my garlic in 2 days ago.

My garlic went in about the same time as yours. The rain has let up a bit so the temp has dropped to the mid 20's at night and barely making it to the low 40's during the day, even with nice clear skies. Or maybe because of the nice clear skies. Still no snow other than one dusting a couple of weeks ago. Not totally unheard of here.
