I am kinda new to 21st century daylilydom. (I was a whiz in the 80's and 90's.) I need your advice. Today I received a small shipment (my last of the season) from a hybridizer/seller who shall remain nameless! This seller gets rave reviews all over the web. I ordered two DF's of middle price range daylilies. Here is one of the DFs:

What would you do? What should I do? Confused

Am I seeing that correctly? It looks like the little piece on the left broke off the larger fan on the right. Could it have been broken off during shipment? If that's the case then I'd call the seller and tell him/her what you've received -a small broken off fan with no roots attached for the 2nd fan on a daylily............Maryl

I would contact the seller as well. Most sellers want to know if you have a problem with the plants they send. Contacting them will also create a record that you had a problem with the plant upon arrival.
You may be able to save the broken fan, there looks to be a bit of crown at the bottom, but it could take some time for it to grow a root system to support blooming.

The two fans were held together with a rubber band and the breaks don't match at all. I have sent the photo with a query about the plant.

Thanks for the advice and support? Thank You!

Charley - Let us know what the outcome is after contacting the seller. I'd be curious to know, personally. I hope they make it right!

That makes it much worse, in my opinion. There should be a lot more roots on that fan on the left. I would be really upset if that is what I got for my money. I originally thought that it had broken off. Honestly, I wouldn't even send that to a friend for free! Thumbs down

Here is a close up of the smaller fan's "roots." Any chance that it would grow into a blooming size fan? How long do you think it would take? The white nubs seem to be growing upwards out of the maristem like early leaves . I can find no sign of roots.

I would like to think that is roots, but I've not seen anything like that on any of my daylilies.

Natalie....I totally agree. Absolutely unacceptable. Held together by a rubber band? I am hoping that the seller will either send another plant or re-imburse you, including shipping costs. Please let us know the outcome. So sorry, Charlie. Bummer!

Alex, I think that the rubber band is acceptable, if it was to hold two fans of the same cultivar together, to keep them separate from the other two fans. That is, of course, if it was two different daylilies purchased. Otherwise, it wouldn't really matter, but I think it is somewhat common to do that. It's the condition of that second fan, and a probable complete lack of any roots, that is totally unacceptable!

Like Becky, I have no idea if those are roots or not. I've never seen anything like that on my plants. To me, it doesn't look anything like roots, but maybe it is. Shrug! I trust Char totally, in that it may have enough crown to grow roots, but it still isn't right!

Char called that crown and odd teeth extensions a 'broken fan'. Personally, I have not seen anything like that before. I could never grow an appendage like that in my neck of the woods. It would never make it through the Winter without a hefty root system. Some of these sellers have others who work for them who dig up these plants. It could be that the seller is unaware what was sent to you. At any rate, you need to contact the seller along with your pix, and tell him/her that this broken fan is unacceptable for planting. You have to do it right away. Most sellers will send a new plant, replacement plant, or refund your costs.

I am really curious to know what those growths are, so I am going to see if some others might join in here! @sooby and @admmad

To me, they look like new fans forming, so I would like to know for sure what they are!

When I ordered Emerald Starburst several years ago I got a fan like that with ONE small root on it. That was totally unacceptable to me. I contacted the seller and he told me that if it didn't make it that he would send me another one or that I could send it back. Anyway, I decided to try and keep it and potted it up instead of putting it in the ground. It did survive and today I have several fans of it. But, I have never ordered from the seller again.

I agree it looks like new fans and not roots. I would pot it up and see if it does grow some roots. Hopefully the seller will offer some compensation or replacement. As stated above often employees are doing the digging & cleaning. But I would think twice about ordering from this seller in the future.

I have bought from a couple of well known sellers with great reviews but I was not happy with what I got so will never purchase from them again.

I'm sorry but I have not seen anything similar and there is not enough detail for me to decide. I am leaning more to roots than new fans but that is based more on the colour than anything else. I do not think it is normal for either roots or new fans.

Contact the seller. Give them the chance to make it right. I've run into problems here and there and especially if people have assistants to aid in packing and shipping, things can slip by. Hope it works out for you!

You know, I really believe that small piece is a proliferation that broke off during transit. I recognize that hybridizer just from the stapled label, and yes he does have a great reputation. I received my second order for the year from him yesterday, and I had a prolif attached to the remains of a dead scape -- and I'm thrilled to get it because it's one of his new summer introductions. So I am getting two plants of it!

I think you should put that small piece in a small glass or plastic cup with water covering the roots, and change the water every day. Then when the roots grow a bit I plant them in pots. And this one is already showing some root growth just from overnight soaking.

Here is my plant and prolif from yesterday -- and look -- the leaves are already growing! I always soak the roots overnight before planting, which is why the roots on the mother plant are wet.

I'll give it a try. It looks as though you got the DF you ordered, congratulations. As you see in the photo the other fan is single. I ordered two plants, a DF. I would be happy to have two fans and a proliferation.
