Thread OP

I am managing a new veterinary clinic and we have two room dividers in the waiting area that are designed to be planters. They are approximately 4 ft high by 4-5 feet long by 12-18" wide. I am looking for suggestions for non-toxic plants that can be used in these planters. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Have you looked at the ASPCA's list of toxic and non-toxic plants? Unfortunately, a lot of the common, easy to grow houseplants are toxic to pets.

There are so many plants that have toxic qualities that could have ill effects on both canines and felines.

This is the ASPCA list of plants that ARE toxic to canines:

As you can see, both lists are extensive. I know that sometimes it's pretty hectic taking a pet to the Vet but I'd hope that clients bringing their pets into the Veterinary Clinic would have the sense to keep their furry family members away from live plant material and other things around the waiting room or offices that they could swallow or choke on.

I know that many folks do not like "fake" plants but the industry is making silk and artificial plants so very lifelike nowadays. Since it would be impossible to watch every pet owner and pet in the waiting room (and especially if liability is an issue) maybe you should consider placing silk plants and flowers in those planters; a plus is that they would not need to be watered or tended except for a little dusting once in awhile! You could always have a few live plants behind the counter, placed up high on file cabinets or shelves ... but then again, if you have resident office kitties like my vet's office does that might not be possible either since cats like to climb and jump. Unfortunately, even artificial plants could be hazardous to some pets (not that any of MY children would try to eat anything they shouldn't Rolling my eyes. ) At only 4 ft high, my little darling would have his nose in there first thing. He routinely tries to climb over the counter to visit with the nice people on the other side at our vet's office.

Thread OP

:thankyou:
You have all been very helpful. I am hoping to stick with live and the lists are giving me some ideas of what I can reasonably work with. I did plan to stay away from African violets though, the whole environment strikes me as stressful to them. If I can pull it off. I may send pics. Thumbs up
