Hello Lucy:

I like the old varieties of Iris that I grew up with. My Mother grew the Iris pallida. There was a large, long patch of it behind our garage. It was an incredible sight. I just have to grow that iris.
I have seen a lot of old, historic Iris that I want to acquire. All of the Iris I have planted now - 10 of them - I got from Ebay, and now I realize that a few of them are infact historic iris. I didn't realize that Iris pallida was what my Mother grew until Linnea posted a photo of it and I recognized it
immediately.

Hello to you Sherry from California. Where do you reside in California? What type of Irises do you grow there? I'm always curious about growers in California, since I have heard there is such a drought problem in California and wonder how gardeners are faring there.

As for me, I have found that I am interested and hope to grow a lot of what I have found out is "Historic" irises. I have acquired a few from Ebay and planted them. But I have found a lot more
I want to add to my collection. I like the form and elegance of historic irises. I have looked at hundreds of Iris photos and many I do not like at all, and to me, they don't look like an Iris at all.
They are "poofy" and "full of Ruffles and curls" and I do not find that attractive and it does not
look like an Iris flower to me at all. They look like a Chrysanthemum! So, I plan on growing the
old-fashioned historic irises of days gone by, just like my Mother did. I'm very excited about my
new venture indeed.

Hello Teresa:

Thank you for your warm "Welcome" to this forum. This is the first year I am growing Iris here in my new home in Southern New Jersey. I have grown Iris previously when I lived in Northern New Jersey, but the soil was quite different up there then it is down here. Here the soil is very sandy.
In North Jersey, the soil was clay. I'm trying to do a lot of reading up regarding soils, and soil
amendments, and learn what Iris like in order to grow and bloom well.

Back then, I remember I grew an Iris called "Immortality" and "Edith Wolford". They were both very
large bloomed Iris and did very well for me.

Alan, I am in northern Kentucky close to cincinnati Ohio. I collect tall bearded modern iris. I like the big ruffles and bright colors. My mother never grew iris, but was a gardener. We had a huge vegetable garden and blackberries. I have loved played in the dirt my entire life. I have always loved being covered in mud. I have been growing iris for about 5 years when my husband and I finished building our house my addiction to the iris began. Started out with 10, went to 30, then 100 well. Let's just say I have added over 150 this year. Lol

That is incredible. You should be commended. How wonderful that you have created a garden with over 150+ Iris plants. I can't imagine it. I'm sure when your Iris bloom it is a sight to behold.
I look forward to seeing photo's of your Iris. It's nice to have a lot of property that you can garden
with. I, too, am an avid gardener, and grow Roses, Lilies, various Perennials, Poppies, and Annuals. My favorites being Cosmos and Zinnia. I could not have a Summer without the spectacular colors of Zinnia. I do not have a large space to garden in - it is limited to a small
patch in the back of the house, and on one side of the house. But I do have Daylilies, Black-eyed
Susan, One TB Iris (Innocent Star is it's name I think) in addition to dwarf dark purple iris that was
on the property when I bought the home. The other gardens were created specifically for
Iris. This is my first year planting them here. I also planted Hydrangea on the property and have
two Rhododendron on the side of the house also.

Oh -- and I think you misunderstood Jen when she mentioned 150 Irises. She said that she *added* that many, *this year*. Depending on how many she had prior to that, she has significantly more that 150. Green Grin!

I unintentionally added almost as many this year as Jen. Which brings me to over 500. Ermagerd!!!!! Blinking Blinking Blinking

Oh my! I can't imagine having property that would be able to house over 500 Iris. That is a lot of work. Do you have to do a lot of work to manage all those Irises? I bet it is a beautiful sight when
all the Irises bloom for you. You must have a lovely property. That's really nice to hear. What types (Names) are the Irises you planted? Do you grow Historics? Any Names that you can recommend to me ? Smiling
