I have an appointment with spring!
Well, I just checked into this daylily auction that you new friends have mentioned. All I can possibly say is " GULP". And maybe perhaps "thank you!!!"
This has been a very trying year for me as well, and when I feel stressed out, I do what addicts do when out of control. I order DLs. And so I have.

I have gotten some awesome seeds/seedlings from the LA. Even some of the major hybridizers get some of their new intro from the LA! So you are in VERY GOOD COMPANY!!! Thumbs up Thumbs up Thumbs up Thumbs up

Vickie - If you ever go there ... you might never be the same again! There is no turning back. Don't click on the LA link! Warning! Warning! Will Robinson!!!

It's the seed crosses that get me every time!!! There are some amazing crosses in the seed auctions! Thumbs up Thumbs up Thumbs up

Vickie - Well, looks like you are well on your way to the sky's the limit and a big hole in your wallet! Whistling Rolling on the floor laughing Rolling on the floor laughing Rolling on the floor laughing Rolling on the floor laughing

I have to either get seeds from online (of which I got started with daylilies from a member here on the forum who shared seeds with me) or order plants online. No nurseries anywhere within 100 miles even sell daylilies here. (The distance is probably even greater than 100 miles.) I've been very lucky to have others share daylilies with me (which doesn't happen very often). And I mainly purchase some daylilies in the classifieds here on ATP (where I have indeed gotten some nice daylilies for very cheap!). The best deals though were when another daylily gardener shared with me! Can't beat that .... ever!

Otherwise, I would not have daylilies at all. And I would never know what terrific plants they are.

Thank goodness there are plenty of enablers here on ATP ! I've been blessed by several others! Thank You! Thank You! Thank You!

@profesora, I know it sounds strange, but true! I used to get all my daylilies from a local dl farm up until they closed a few years ago, so I had no need to order online. They had over 1000 dl's to choose from. Boy do I miss that place! So finally I joined two dl clubs this year, joined the AHS, and ordered online to get my addiction fixes, Rolling on the floor laughing Rolling on the floor laughing

Oh! What I wouldn't give to have even 1 daylily club near me. Sighing! Every time I read about the fun DL gardeners are having at their clubs, I am so envious.

I am the lone gardener in my neighborhood. I have a few friends that also garden, but the few that do, do vegetable gardening, not really flower or nectar plant gardening. They have some health problems and have to garden organically to get some of their fresh veggies. (I need to talk to them about which veggies they are growing!)

No one else around here gardens for hummers. Some do plant a nectar plant here and there for the butterflies, but no host plants for the caterpillars, so they don't have the butterflies in their yard that I have because of all the host plants I grow.

I feel like the lone conservationist here in my area. I try to garden organically and provide a habitat in my yard for the wildlife. The down side is that sometimes I also attract wildlife I don't want hanging around ..... like roof rats. Ugh! But good and bad come with that ..... it's the balance of nature.

Becky, it is sad that there aren't any daylily clubs around you there. I just joined two this year and they are both struggling. Membership has gone way down, so there may come a day when I won't have a club to be in anymore. We are so lucky to have the community here online to talk to and share things with. As nice as it is, it just isn't the same as that face-to-face interaction though.

I know you have lived there a long time and probably are right about no other flower gardeners. But I've lived here for 36 years and only 3 years ago did I find out that there is a lady a block away who has over 1000 daylilies in her back yard! I was driving to work one early spring day and saw all the daylily labels sticking up in her back yard. That night, I walked over and knocked on her door and introduced myself. We are friends now and even go to the meetings together sometimes. I am hoping that something like that will happen to you!

Thanks, Vickie! I doubt I will meet anyone who is into daylilies here. No one sells them here anywhere even within 100 miles of me. Of course there could be someone ordering them online like I do! But I've not seen any daylilies anywhere in any yards here locally. Actually not many yards with flowers either. It's green here. Lots of lawns, palm trees (ugh!), and shrubs. Not even blooming shrubs. Grrrrr .... I grow plumbago all around my yard, blooms blue flowers and the butterflies are all over it! Honestly, my yard sticks out like a sore thumb. It's funny because the neighbors around my home are always watching what I am doing. I think they think I am crazy to grow so many flowering plants! Yes. You can. Just look for people willing to ship internationally. Every once in a while you'll hear stories of over zealous customs agents who don't know the laws being a problem but that seems to be rare. Last year I sent seeds to Russia, Ukraine, The Netherlands, Canada, Sweden, Germany, France, Australia, Poland, and The Czech Republic.

I ship anywhere that they don't have restrictions on shipping seeds to. I also have shipped to Russia, China, Netherlands, Poland, Great Britain, New Zealand, Sweden, France and Austria.

Sighing! I agree !
As far as I know there's no DL club in the entire COUNTRY..! Sad
Some of the people in my street have a (one) DL in their front yard, but those are mostly Stella d'Oro
Most don't even know what they have in their garden Thumbs down

Hopefully people will be inspired when they see my DL's blooming next season Lovey dubby

And then you can share and sell the divisions and seeds to your countrymen/women! Make a little profit off your daylily hobby! Start a new garden fad and start a popular Daylily Club. It could happen.

When I first moved into my current home over 20 years ago, it was a fairly new neighborhood. I rarely saw anyone outside. I had 2 young children and one teenage son. There were no children that I ever saw. I started going once a week to a half hour storytime program at the local library and met other mothers and their young children. We enjoyed seeing each other once a week and even set up play dates for our children. But it was not enough. So I started a Playgroup. It started with 10 women and their children. Then grew by word of mouth. At one point there were over a hundred families who were members, some were even dads, nannies, grandparents, and babysitters. We decided to walk as a group (we had t-shirts made up) in the local 4th of July parade. I remember everyone on the sidelines asking who we were! Our playgroup was the best kept secret in our city! We were a big hit because of our children waving to everyone! I never advertised. I did a monthly newsletter, planned outings, and field trips (we got a group discount), and even did a Mother's Night Out (once a month). I did that for 8 years and then had to go back to work. People actually cried when I resigned. The playgroup was passed on to another mother. She tried to do the best she could but unfortunately the playgroup dissolved 2 years later. I have so many wonderful memories of that playgroup. It all started from a "need". There was nothing for parents and their young children to do here to meet others. That all changed because a few of us met at the library once a week and saw a need to do more and we acted on that desire.

Same could be said of a gardening club. Or a daylily club. You get enough people involved, you could be really surprised what it might develop into! Most people love to belong to something. And gardening is a very popular hobby for many people. So you put socializing and gardening together .... you might just have a big hit on your hands! Start out by sharing your daylilies and then add an event or a sale or a BBQ ....

There used to be a daylily club here in my county years ago. When rust hit Florida in the early 2000, collector's mindset changed. Especially those who live in central and south Florida. The daylily craze fizzled out and has never recovered here. I am secretly hoping I can change that by hybridizing some rust resistant daylilies and sharing them with friends and neighbors and maybe even selling a few to local gardeners. That is my long-term dream. Not sure if it will become a reality or not. Time will tell ..... Smiling
