I wanted to start this conversation to get some idea so I can do some idea borrowing and share what I do for winter container.

I mentioned in another post that when I bring my succulents inside for the winter I like them in mixed containers. I like them in containers that compliment the plants or a container that will be a conversation piece.

Some of the containers are extremely small but I use them as temporary for winter and I water very little during the winter. Some plants I just use a squirt bottle and dampen the soil. Most of my small succulents are placed in my sun room if they are small containers they go in the bedroom window, living room window and dining room window. Small single plantings in small containers work very well on a window sill.

I will post some of what I have as I get them potted up. I would like to see what some have done. I looked around at what I have collected for this years display and it seems I am going to have a lot of shoes this year. Hilarious!

Okay I will start. I have gathered up the plants and trying to figure out what is going to go into what.

As you can see I do have a shoe collection going on here. Hilarious! I know that will be the topic of conversation of my guess this winter. I just been drawn to them when I see them. So one area in the morning room is going to be shoes and the bright colorful pots.

I have more that I will post as I get them out to be planted.

Most of my plants are unpotted, in the ground for temporary summer vacation still, but here's some that stayed in pots all summer:

Easter cactus with Kalanchoe blossfeldiana, Aglaonema commutatum, Gibasis geniculata (Tahitian bridal veil,) that have been together for a while, with some recently added Begonia, Tripogandra...

Peperomia 'Jellie' with Kalanchoe blossfeldiana, Stapelia and some bits & pieces of epiphytic jungle cacti that haven't revealed themselves by blooming yet:

Kalanchoe luciae with Euphorbia tirucalli (pencil cactus) and Rhipsalis:

Variegated Opuntia with E. tirucalli & tithymaloides (devil's backbone,) and a little Crassula:

Will be putting together several new pots soon, to bring grounded plants inside for winter. I have yet to branch out to more interesting/attractive pots, always putting all plant budget (tiny as it is) to new plants, but maybe you will like some of the plant combos.

Thank you Tiffany.

My planters for winter are all from garage sales and Goodwill. I try to keep the budget low doing it that way. I just want it pretty for the winter when they come indoors. I have a lot of company for Thanksgiving and Christmas so I try to make the display pretty.

They are Temp decor pieces I can put them in large pots in the summer. You know I am like you and love to put together large combo pots.

I'm sure your guests will be wow'ed by your awesome plants! I can't wait to see what you come up with.

This doesn't look great yet, but I have confidence the ornamental purslane (Portulaca umbraticola) pieces I stuck in the bottom will recover. This isn't really a planter, it was the lid to a little Wardian case but the bottom part rusted too badly to keep around. I hung the lid upside-down, lined with window screen, added some plants and squirrels promptly tore it apart. Added a 2nd round of babies with a rock in the middle and that's been going well. The Portulaca was added last weekend by snipping holes in the window screen & sticking cuttings in.

That is gorgeous. That had to be a beautiful Case in its' day now it will be a beautiful colorful hanging basket.

I was wondering if I bring in the Portulaca this winter if they would survive and bloom next year. Do you keep them alive all winter or do you let them go dormant?

TY! I'm going to take tons of cuttings and see what happens, IDK either. That's how that pot got nominated to be included. Had a lot of surface area to use and I know I'll be hanging it in a sunny spot. Most info sources say Portulacas are nannuals, but so many people have anecdotes of them overwintering inside, and showing up outside in a way the following year that doesn't seem like seedlings. My moss roses (P. grandiflora) all died out, which I was afraid of from putting the store-bought root balls of peat & styrofoam into the ground. (Should have taken cuttings first.) I can only experiment with P. umbraticola & amilis this winter.

I was looking up the plant that is behind the Portulaca that I asked could it bloom after 2 yrs.

The description of how to store this plant is the process I use for all my succulents. If this plant is a Portulaca then I think we have a good chance if stored properly during the winter it will live and bloom next year.

Your thoughts? When it started to bloom I thought it was this succulent because of the red edges.

Completely adorable! So colorful! I think the plant right behind the Portulaca is Anacampseros rufescens. Your pic makes me think I still have way too big of pots for some of my plants. Need to shift the ones in plastic to clay pots at least... or cute little pottery pieces and do the spray-not-water thing.

If your plant rooms are cool and you do not love to water squirt bottle can work. I have been doing it for 15yr. I squirt the soil

Fun thread Cinta. I will start taking pictures of the pots I am getting ready for the winter. Every year I have the debate over if I should move around lots of small pots or fewer larger ones. I usually end up with both. I take plants in and out all winter to get some sun and to keep them compact. My system is a complete pain but I guess it is a good workout.

This one I combined my card board palm with three of my succulent pots saving a few feet of space. I put styrofoam in the bottom so the pot is a lot lighter in weight than it looks. I really did it for function but I kind of like how it turned out.

I am trying to be more prepared this year for winter rather than scrambling at the last hour to get all my stuff taken care of. So over the past few weeks I have been realizing how many plants I have and started to feel a little panic.(this happens every year before winter sets in) To make myself feel better about having way to many plants I made myself feel better by ordering some bromeliads from ebay Blinking
I am starting to wonder when the day will come when I walk in the door to all my friends sitting around the table with somber expressions on their face and a stern "Audrey, we need to talk" Rolling on the floor laughing

Thank you so much for showing me your pot. That is gorgeous. That will have anyone walk into your home want to start a plant collection. That is what I love to see in the winter in the house. That pot is to die for. Now you have made me want to hit the stores and look for a green pot.

I totally understand your problem. I make a special trip to Lowes every week to see what they have on sale. I think I have a problem but it gives me such joy.

Thanks Cinta. I painted that pot green. Some of my plastic pots are starting to look sun bleached and need a little makeover. I have two smaller ones I am going to paint the same color for a matching collection. I saw a picture of Debra Baldwin's work where she had a large rack of succulents that all had green planters. I really love that look and might try something like that next spring. This is the picture that inspired me about the green pot color. I wish I had a plant rack like that too Lovey dubby

That's beautiful.
I would think a type of baker's rack would work for a setup like that and I am always seeing those in the resale shops.

Hetty, I have seen a few around but they are either to flimsy for outdoor use or crazy expensive. I would love to have a really nice one on wheels that could be rolled around when ever I rearrange. My husband told me one day that I gardened like the plants were furniture. It drives him nuts how much I move stuff around.

I love that rack. I saw one similar at Goodwill last week. You probably have to hit some of those thrift stores to find something solid. The stuff they are selling these days is flimsy. Like everything these days higher price and cheaply made.

My goodness we are too much alike Audrey. I think of my plants and pots as part of the furniture and home decor. I do it mainly because they have to be in the house so many months out of the year.

My ex use to try to sneak in at night and walk into furniture because I had moved things around. He hit the floor countless times thinking he knew where the bed was...... Rolling on the floor laughing

Of course we move our plants! They outgrow the space they were originally assigned to, don't they?

OMgoodness! Audrey, the pot posted @ Sep 27, 2015 1:01 PM CDT is one of the prettiest ever!! So in love/lust/leer!!

A hanging pot with eclectic assortment & blooming Ledebouris bulb. I figured if I'm never going to turn it, some lower-light plants might do OK on the backside. That's my area of concentration for experimenting with & observing pots this winter - more of the never-turned front/back thing, and (new to me) using the dark side of some pots to home plants that wouldn't usually go in a pot with high-light-sters.
Thumb of 2015-09-28/purpleinopp/d24fae

Some of the Portulaca umbraticola in this pot is starting to perk up. Some pieces might not make it, their ends might have ended up too close to an edge, IDK. That's OK, I can keep adding more until it's full.
Thumb of 2015-09-28/purpleinopp/282d64

There's really not much soil in here at all. Theoretically, even *I* can't overwater this thing this winter, but, of course, you know I'll be trying, always in recovery... ! ;+)

Tiffany, thankyou! I added some purple to the top and thought of you. If I try to stuff anymore in there I will have to get a larger pot Hilarious! I like your idea of using the dark side of the pot and not turning the pots all winter. Good idea. I like your cute little hanging basket. I will be interested in seeing how it does for you over the winter.
I got two other planters painted today. I need to smudge some black paint in the crevices to give more of an aged look I think.
