I have a major Wheeler that was planted in the spring. It has grown well and flowered . 3 weeks ago it stopped flowering and the leaves started to yellow from the bottom up.
Is this normal for the middle of Sept.?It gets about 5 hrs. of Sun a day. Sprinkler sys. At least 1" of water a week.
I live in Toledo Ohio U.S.
Well Bob, I'm way on down in FL & mine is evergreen. But still, I would say no, what you're experiencing is not normal. Let's see what others in colder regions have to say.
@Newyorkrita Rita has this plant as well. As a matter of fact Rita rooted the one I have off of one of hers & sent it to me so mine is a yankee who retired to the south.

Dark outside so I can not go look at mine either right now. However, that sounds pretty normal to me as the vines do loose their leaves in the fall and go dormant.
Mine gets kind of scraggly when we really start getting cold here but it does retain about 1/2 the leaves throughout winter. Right now it's still going strong though as we have been very warm.

So I did go out and look at it this morning. The leaves are all still very much green. But here it has not been cold enough for it to start to go dormant. It has proved to be quite cold hardy for me anyway and many years stays green until extremely late in the season.

I am in Zone 5 B and mine still looks pretty good - even with temps in low 40 s.
My guess is that yous is just starting to shut down. Having only been in ground for 6 montsh or so, it has not had enough time to lay down a huge root system. If you are worried, you could take some cuttings for rooting. Good luck.
I just saw this and I too have 'Major Wheeler'. I've it in a 20 inch container that sits on soil in a flowerbed with a tall trellis leaning onto the container.
When you mentioned that it stopped flowering in mid September. I wanted to tell you (for next year, since it is late December) that I keep the flowers deadheaded every day and/or every week (every year). I've had mine blooming all the way through today 12/25/15. It is unusual for it to be blooming this late into December, but because of the unusual warm weather we've had and with my constant deadheading, I've flowers and flower buds. Of course, in normal years it will be blooming well into the fall for me.

That's amazing that it's still blooming!
I wasn't good about deadheading this past year--it seemed like clockwork that we had beautiful sunny days all week while I was at work, and then it would rain over the weekend!

It's interesting the difference that one hardiness zone makes! My Lonicera has been blooming non stop since spring and is pretty much semi evergreen in my climate. I'm surprised it isn't listed as such on plant info sites.
