A surprise for me this week. I wasn't expecting any bloom and wasn't looking and then there they were! This was an impulse buy from Wal-Mart this spring. One of those plastic packages with a photo and a root. The bloom doesn't look anything like the one that came on the package except that it's obviously a Tricyrtis bloom. The package was sold as 'Toad Lily' - no notation of Tricyrtis.

Wow! Is the bloom as vivid as the pic implies? Too bad the package didn't come with a cultivar name.

Yes, the photo is accurate if you enlarge it. It was odd when I first saw it. It's sitting up against the house which is painted white so all you could see were the darker areas. I initially thought a grasshopper had eaten it and I was seeing a bloom eaten up! A closer examination revealed the more typical Tricyrtis type pattern. I looked in the database and didn't see one posted that's a good look alike. I grew one a few years ago and the photo on the package matched it pretty closely. The spots or blotches were tinted a lot more raspberry red than this one. It appears that there are going to be a lot more blooms coming along. I hope! What forum do these fit in, do you know? Tropical?

Perennial

They are a perennial and grow well in shady areas . I have mine with my hosta . They are one of the last flowers in the fall to bloom.

Ah! See, Cinda! I had plans to plant this in with my cast iron pot of Hosta!. I stuck some ferns in earlier in the spring (a Wal-Mart plastic plastic package also and which also does not appear to be what the label said Smiling ) I've got to do some research about the minimum cold temp they can handle. It's on for early next spring, not now.

Good grief no! 10 below? 20 above just about does me in!! The rare occasions we get single digits even overnight are just awful. But a cast iron wash pot surely isn't the same as being in the ground. The Hosta has managed it for 3 years now without a blip, but the fern, and maybe next year, the Tricyrtis, haven't been tested. That it can handle -10F is sure a hopeful sign. Thanks for that bit of info!

I grow 4 different types here and I'm in zone 5. No problems with them not coming back in the spring. Most of the varieties have paler color blotches on the flowers so I'm rather impressed with the darker color.

Here is my 'Blue Wonder' I just planted this summer. I have killed a few Toad Lillies l but I am hoping this spot is better. This variety has flowers that are more noticeable than the others I tried.

Yep - nice selection. They have some other desirable plants but I've been trying to scout out local nurseries due to shipping charges.

I grow mine in a pot, so that when it blooms, I can move it to where it can better show itself off! The flowers are amazing, but not real large. Mine is a variety named 'Empress", dark purple flowers. She's just now showing buds, I'll post a pic when she deigns to bestow her full glory.

I never thought about growing it in a pot - great idea. At this time of year, it would be nice to have a blooming beauty to position where it can be seen instead of mingled with all of the other fading perennials in my garden.

Take note that Jacque is in zone 8 and this plant may not survive our zone 5 winters in a pot.

Cinda - I noticed the zone. That would be the dilemma - where to store the potted plant. All of my spaces are heated to some degree although I have a cold frame that won't drop below 20 degrees. Thermostatically controlled 60 watt light bulb will come on to protect potted greens.

Yep Toad Lily. Tricyrtis hirta. Tolerate partial to full shade. I have it planted with Spider wort (bloomed couple months ago) in one of my shade gardens with hostas, autumn fern and vinca minor. In the background are 5 Azaleas. The toad lily is a late bloomer so while the hostas are looking ragged this adds color to an otherwise drab area this time of year.
