Hi All,

Any experiences with this cold frame (Biostar 1500 Premium)?

Or do you know of a DIY one that would be VERY easy to do yourself.

Hi TC - Dont' know about the Biostar cold frame but if you want something easy, cheap and as big as you need, check out a DIY PVC Cold Frame:

Thank You Albert. I saved the file.

I wonder if that would hold up to a couple feet of snow, or the winter winds we get, but it's worth considering.

That looks very interesting. I'll have to look for bpa free plastic. Thank You!

DH built a tall "lean to" cold frame last year out of cedar. Then used double wall poly for light. Bought everything at local big box store (Menards). I do use it for storing potted greens like chard and kale over winter. Since it's only temporary for me, we did put hardware cloth on the bottom to keep out voles which love to eat anything I put in there. I can put rigid styrofoam insulation inside against the walls if it's going to get really cold and also have a thermostat-controlled 60 watt light bulb that can come on if it gets really frigid (like last year). I don't know if you want to go to the trouble of cutting wood and poly panels, etc.

@Shadegardner I am curious about your thermostat-controlled 60 watt light bulb? Can you tell me where you got and/or who makes it ? Thanks Smiling

Carol - there are a few different temperature ranges for the cold weather outlets but this is the brand that I have.

I have the one that goes on at 20 and off at 30. Just plug in a light socket and screw in a 60 watt lightbulb. Obviously, you'd have to connect to a power source with this one. You can also get them for warm weather as well. I think there's even a type that can be switched manually between cold weather and warm weather.
