There are quite a few of Tetraploid spiders.
Pat Stamile made a lot of them.

Hybridizing for them can be tough, they rarely set seed pods.

I was going to use French Twist as an example, but your link is better. A couple are showing up in that search that I wouldn't think were really spiders, though. Autumn Valentine and Cherries Jubilee e.g. Did the rules change subsequent to their registration, I wonder?

I'm no expert, but I'm limiting my daylilies to mostly spiders and Unusual Forms which can be spiders as well. I don't discriminate between dips and tets, so I'm growng both. Some are hard to get seeds from, but others seem relatively easy. Tets seem more difficult than dips in that regard and when they do produce pods for me, those pods don't contain nearly as many seeds as pods obtained on the dips. I think some spiders and spider types are hard to set a pod on because of the length the pollen has to travel to make a connection Smiling . I've still got some dip seeds to give away from this year where both parents were spiders. You need to try. You never know. Something might work for you that hasn't for anyone else.

I've never tried spiders before and have got seeds from a few to try from LA. Was looking the parents up on this site. The seller has them listed a dips but they are on here as tets. That's why I was wondering

I've only started with DL's this year and I'm totally in love with spiders and UF's! Lovey dubby

I haven't tried setting any pods this year, because I wanted to get them settled and a bit bigger.
But I wás planning on dabbling a bit with pollen next summer... Whistling

I understand that it isn't as simple as it seemed? Hmm. Quite the challange! Rolling on the floor laughing
If you are willing to tell more about your experiences, Donald, I (and probably others) are a captive audience! Thumbs up

I'm just somewhat incorrigible about pollen daubing. I try to resist but if there is pollen and available blooms, I daub. I tried to limit it this year by ONLY using pollen from Lillian's Vapor Trail in dip attempts except when I daubed on LVT. I got lots of takes and lots of seeds. I even had two pods on LVT, but I accidentally pulled the scape off on one and the grasshoppers (or something) ate the other. I haven't found it too hard to obtain seeds. I get pods using tets, but not as many and the pods just contain fewer seeds, so it's a bit harder for me on the tets. That is just my experience though. It might be different for someone else. Last year I planted every seed thinking they would be hard to germinate. The result is I have hundreds of seedlings with no place to grow. I found a home for a lot of the duplicates so I didn't just have to dump them. The fate of most of those still here is pretty doubtful. So in addition to not finding it hard to get seeds, I also found it easy to get lots of plants from those seeds. My planting of those seeds was pretty careless, too. The percent of germination really surprised me. A number of pods germinated at 100%. Again, the tets didn't seem to germinate quite as well, but they also had more delayed germination. It was a relief they didn't germinate as well Smiling .

A note on the pods on LVT. LVT tends to start opening at dusk the night before the day of bloom. I had some pollen I'd collected earlier and did those daubs by opening that bloom and applying the pollen. I'm not sure that's the reason I got the two pods growing or not, but it never set one by waiting and doing it early in the morning. I expect real hybridizers have tricks they use to help. Those serious hybridizers will be the ones that can give really good advice.

Around here, Ashton crosses tets and dips and I only do dips. I have spider and UF daylilies that are diploid where the hybridizer lists as not pod fertile or pod difficult but I set pods on them and have seedlings growing from them. Ashton has very few seeds over the past 3 years where the pod parent is a tet spider.

Good to hear someone else has set seed on Lillian's Vapor Trail, I have tried all the tricks and never set a pod on it. Most of its offspring are very easy to set seed on.

I love and collect spidery or UF daylilies. For me the tets are difficult to ever set a pod. Dips are a Lot easier to work with. I just got in a an order from Dan Bachman. LOVE his Fall sales.!

I hope you all don't mind another couple of questions.

When you cross a UF and a "regular" daylily, do you get a higher percentage of UF or "regular" seedlings? Or maybe it doesn't matter, and you get what you get?

Are UF daylilies harder to set seeds on, like spiders are? I have one tet UF seedling that I bought several years ago, and I can't get a pod to set on it, but its pollen is super fertile. I hadn't thought about maybe the form being part of the problem. The parents are unknown, but it is stunning!

I don't know what the percentage is, but it is possible, I will try it more next year because I have a few more pattern daylilies to work with.

When I cross a ufo or spider daylily with a regular flower, I seem to get more ufo types, but I really haven't planted enough of those type of crosses to see what the percentage would be. It would take planting a lot of seeds and I just do not have the room.
