I mentioned in The thread "Finally did *something*" in Miniature Gardening forum that the children were really taken with the idea and are wanting to start their own miniature gardens.

It dawned on me, they've already started a couple... sort of. It was kind of my fault. The pot I bought for a plant was waay to big, so I put some rocks and a toy Bald Eagle on the soil to take up space until the plant fills out. Last month, they repotted their cactus and did this.

Probably the biggest thing hindering progress is finding some plants small enough to use. Building and painting something is the easy part. We all are taken with the Living Stones, but have no idea where to get them. I think it is getting too cold to have any shipped and I already asked the local nursery if he carries any and he doesn't. Maybe the planting part will have to wait. I am just beginning to try more house plants and am afraid of killing too much.

Very cute. The cactus are good as long as you do not water them. Teach everyone in the house add more decor and step away from the water especially in the winter. I do not water them at all in the winter.

Kim, I've been going through catching up reading and enjoying here at ATP forums. I thought I'd mention to you that I saw Lithops (Living Stones) at Lowe's in their indoor greenhouse section. If you have a Lowe's near, you may want to check there for them. Even though approaching winter, they seemed to have a nice small selection of succulents that can be used for indoor purposes. I like it because they offer them in those little 1" or 2" containers; which plants can usually be transplanted into an existing planter arrangement.

I now see that Lowe's was also mentioned here in the Our Mini Gardens thread.

I thought I saw Lithops at Lowe's a couple of years ago, I was not about to try any house plants, though. Around that time people were giving me house plants as gifts and I was just so frustrated with them dying, that I didn't feel I had the patience to deal with anything more.

But now that I want them, they don't have them. I will keep checking. With all the projects going on, we've been making more trips to the "man stores". Smiling We have bought a couple other things from Lowe's. I am getting more practice with the needs of these indoor plants. I tend to go overboard, I need to really limit what I buy for now and make sure I don't kill what I have.

Living stones can be tricky with the water. I hate to water and I have killed them. Plants in my house get watered maybe once a month or two in the winter. I killed the living stones in the summer I think we got too much rain that year and I did not watch and pull them inside when we rained every day for weeks.

I have found the quickest way to kill plants is to give them too much attention. Plants usually need very little especially in the winter because they are resting. Give them too much attention and water is a recipe for death.

I agree I can't seem to keep those living stones alive.

Gigi, you should be able to keep yours outside too, if you have a covered spot with south or west exposure.

I will try again Tiffany but even at Lowe's this winter time, those living stones are not cheap and I killed a few already.
