I good friend of mine just moved into a new house and I’m helping him out with ideas for landscape improvements. Of course I am going to recommend some daylilies! Thumbs up nodding

The problem is there are a lot of trees surrounding the house so most beds get dappled sunlight with some periods of direct sun.

Anyone have any recommendations for northern cold-hardy daylilies that seem to bloom well with less than ideal amount of sunlight? I'm all ears!

Thanks! Thank You!

Hi Dennis,

Prior to our move we were on a city lot with a number of our neighbor's trees hanging over top of some of our plants.
Ones that did quite well with this "umbrella" included:

Strawberry Candy
Siloam Double Classic
Pumpkin Pie Spice
Rayon Double
Africa

Some that did poorly were:

Precious Candy
Red Rum
Sabine Bauer

What is interesting is that now we have all our plants in full sun some are struggling.

Ida's Magic is probably the worst. Seems that it wants a little shade.
There are a number of others that we have that were quite new to us before we moved that now are
quite slow to increase. Perhaps this is a sign that some shade is preferred.
Examples include:

Chartered Course
Cherry Valentine
Chili Spice
Copperhead Road
Dominic Brock Cain
Francois Verhaert
Lady Betty Fretz
Lee Pickles

Hope that is some help!
Giles

Mayo,

That's what I thought too! However, that is not what we've experienced.
I will admit that water probably has a lot to do with the "non-performance" of some of these plants.
We do not have an irrigation system, and the plants have rain as their primary water source.
Supplementary watering (i.e. garden hose) only happens when there has been no rain for somewhere around 10 days.

So perhaps those that struggle in full sun are not as drought tolerant as those that don't.

Perhaps someone can contribute on the water needs of different cultivars.

hi Giles,

Do you get a lot of rain where you live?

I started growing DL's this year so I'm certainly no expert Hilarious!
But when temperatures were in the 70's I watered my DL's every other day.. Thumbs up
and when temps were over 83-84F (which doesn't happen often Hilarious! ) I watered for an hour

As I understand it water is even more essential than fertilizer (during the summer)

We get just over 800mm rain and just under 100cm snow (on average) per year.
We used to water (back when we were urban dwellers) more often than we now do.
A city lot is easy to water with a sprinkler or garden hose.

Now we have 9 daylily beds. Each are between 60 and 65 metres long and about 1.5 -2 metres wide.

So in total, that is over 1/2 km in length - a lot of garden hose, and about 6 hours of watering.
That is why we have only done it a few times.

I tend to water the seedlings and 1st/2nd year plants more often, but the established ones tend to
get ignored, and are only watered during extended dry spells.

We don't fertilize (never have - organic?!).

So, I guess I am explaining to myself why the plants are not doing as well now as they used to.
Effectively, I am not really giving them what they need to flourish (sufficient water) as well as they can.

Cheers
May the blooms be with you!

Thank for the replies everyone! Thumbs up

is a very nice option I think.

I’ve done a bit more searching and would add these to the list of potentially northern shade-tolerant daylilies:

I was very happy to see Beautiful Edgings is a possibility. I think I will get a few of these and give them as a house-warming gift. Big Grin

Dennis, good luck! Beautiful Edgings was one of my first purchases this year and I loved it, even though I don't normally like pastels. It's very photogenic. Mine held up well despite the clay -like soil here in Michigan, so I hope it does well for you and your neighbor.

Golden Prize was one of my last 'purchases' this year, I've had it about 2 months now, I think. I got it from www.oakesdaylilies.com and it is doing great so far. It gets morning and afternoon sun, but it's shaded during most of the day this time of year because of where the sun is at in relation to my house.

I'd have to double check my initial fan count from Oakes, but I think atleast 1-2 of those fans is new as of the last week or two. I can't promise you it flowers well in shade, yet, but since mine doesn't get a lot of sunlight this time of year, I can say it will atleast develop good foliage in the shade!

@DogsNDayliles Thanks!

Like you I got Beautiful Edgings this spring and overall it did quite well and put out some impressive blooms. Did struggle a bit in full sun during the summer, though moles messing with developing roots could have had something to do with that. Has definitely found a new gear this fall with the cooler temps. Thumbs up

Thanks for the info on Golden Prize. Nice to hear about its vigor. Looks like you've got some grass working its way around the dls. I am so scared about that-- it can be so tough to remove if it gets settled in. Thumbs down I've got an old bed that is overrun with weeds but all my new beds I put down preen and have been weeding every single sprout I see. Not sure how long I'll be able to keep that up though Hilarious!

Right now I’m leaning toward two groupings for my friend: Beautiful Edgings + Bangkok Bay and Hyperion + Golden Prize. Interesting you are buying from Oakes down in Tennessee. I’m thinking of buying from Ogden here in Michigan. Never bought from them but they have these at ridiculously low prices. Plus they have a couple that I want to get for myself (despite that I told myself I wouldn’t get any more Hilarious! ). Thinking I will make the drive over there next year and check them out. On–site pickup might make me able to get clumps too which would be great…
