We came from here

The thread "Our Orchid blooms in October 2015" in Orchids forum

A somewhat dreary 1. November morning here, but temps are going again to be around 70 degr F this week.
I am waiting impatiently on a lot of new buds and spikes, so here are at least some repeat blooms to start the month. The Greenhouse smells wonderful right now!

And there is now a third spike open on the Bc Binosa 'Tetraploid', one more to go.

Dreary November day here too. But we are going house hunting today...Open houses galore. Good day to check out the back yards for greenhouse space. Whistling

With hubby's knees we have to have a single story. There a lots of houses in Memphis and 50% are single story. Plenty to choose from.

You and I are/were in the same boat, Melissa. I fought the upkeep on a three-story house for 15 years, often putting a 24' ladder in the bed of my pickup truck to be able to get to the highest point Sticking tongue out That, a bad back, and hips going south, and my wife finally said "enough". We bought a new single-story house 5 years ago and now the tallest ladder is 12' and is used mainly to get to my orchid tree-shelves during the spring and summer months. We do have an ample backyard, one large enough for the two greenhouses, my equipment shed, and a sizable raised garden. I don't miss being 25+ feet off the ground. Thumbs down

Nice start to the month, Ursula. I just love the Mini Purple 'Shibuya' - what a great flower for a small plant.

I have a new flower today - after three years of nursing this plant back from death's door (and that's why the leaves don't look so great) this is Blc. Chia Lin 'New City' with one huge, fragrant flower the size of my hand. Once again, the color is considerably more dusky and deeper, but I did my best to get it. I've never seen one with such a huge lip!

Still more new 'Yellow Birds' coming along on the big cork raft. I really love the coloration when they first open like this.

Elaine, how nice to get your Chia Lin going again. Thumbs up It surely smells great too!

My Cattlianthe, formerly Lc, Mary Elizabeth Bohn 'Royal Flare' opened another spike. I always love the color on this one. The plant doesn't look that great, since I keep this one always in full blast sun exposure. It needs the sun to keep from growing out floppy.

Here are my latest efforts to bore you all with: Chia Lin is now all the way open and I tried a couple of different lighting methods to see what color it came out. Neither is quite right, but the one with the flash is the closest, and picks up the dusky diamond dusting on the petals.

love those spathogalotis...they are hardy here in Florida ?..Do they bloom on and off all year?...or is this their season?
I have found through trial and error...some colored flowered blooms do better on over cast days..others in full sun..I hardly ever get a good picture with a flash..unless it's a 'fill flash' in other words...the plant is in the shade..but there is a patch of bright sunlight behind the flower ( which fools the camera meter)..mostly..I put the plant in full sun with shade just behind. and that makes the background disappear...and the flower colors are deep and rich..if there's diamond dusting on the petals I can usually capture it this way as well.

Going to try that tomorrow, thanks Lindsay.

Spathoglottis are amazingly long bloomers. They put out a spike and it elongates and keeps opening new buds for months. They usually start up earlier, but I divided and re-potted a bunch of mine last spring so they were mostly sulking over the summer and just really got going again a month ago.

Yes, they are hardy here but I do have them in pots and protect them under a frost cloth 'tent' if the temps are going to get down into the 40's.

Keep an eye out at your local Lowe's. They've had at least 4 colors of Spaths that I have brought home - white, yellow, purple and one of the bi-color ones in the pics above.

I'm going to an Open House at Plantio la Orquidea on Friday, any chance of somebody coming along? Patty and Jim are both out of town, and they are usually my co-conspirators. Lindsay, it's just a hop and a skip from I-75 for you.

Hmmm Elaine, you identified my no ID orchid as Chia Lin, here are the pics from last year's bloom. It is much bigger now with three buds but the sheats looks like they are turning brown. I was hoping they will bloom agai this year.

Love the Chia Lins! Lovey dubby
Ambient light seems to be the way to go with these deep red colors. But then I haven't used my Nikon in ages. My Chia Lin has some fat sheaths, so perhaps I can put the IPad camera to the test on those soon.

Yes, that sure looks like mine, Gigi. Don't despair if the sheaths turn brown, they still may bloom. I learned my lesson on that one! Cut off a brown, dry sheath and discovered a bud forming inside it. Argh!

Woo hoo, more Chia Lins coming along from Ursula too. Hurray! Even my husband (renowned for his tunnel vision) could not miss that huge, fragrant flower as he walked through the pool cage.

What is it with some orchids blooming out of what looks like a dead sheath?...is it a particular trait associated with a certain family?...or just a random thing? I used to clean up my plants when moving them from the greenhouse to outside and again when moving back indoors. I was stunned that several months after the clean up 3 big fat buds grew out of the stump.
Elaine...tell me more about the Friday field trip you have planned...I have a thing in my neighborhood that I have to be back for by around 3...
