Daylily (Hemerocallis 'Beautiful Edgings')

I REALLY love this daylily! It was added last year, I think, thanks to a friend sharing it with me, and it has done really well here. It has multiplied very nicely, and has bloomed its head off! In fact, this was the last one blooming in the garden this year, thanks to some great rebloom! I can't say enough good things about it. It has quickly become a favorite, especially because it seems to bloom forever! After being moved about a month ago. I should have cut the scape, but decided to see what would happen. It never slowed down!

Another great thing that I noticed was that it wasted no time settling in, and quickly got to the height and size it is registered at. Seems like most of the daylilies I have added will take longer to get to their full potential. Not this one! It acted like it has been growing here for years, right from the start.

I can echo Natalie's experience. I acquired it fairly late last year, later than I would normally plant. It survived the long cold zone 4 winter, bloomed this year and the flowers were perfect. An instant favourite here too.

This is one of the few pastels that I love! She bloomed for a very long time, it seemed, and I remember being startled to learn that her color is supposed to be a pale yellow (with pink edges), because she often appeared to me as a near white (with pink edges). I was so smitten with a particularly lovely picture I had taken offone of her blooms that it was my avatar for a long while (and might become so again in the future).

I don't recall much about her foliage, although I do think it is still somewhat green here in our unusually mild November this year. It's hard to tell in the dark, though.

She is not a rebloomer this year in my garden, but she seems to have earned a permanent place in my garden despite being pastel and not reblooming. She is aptly named.

I added BE in late spring of 2014, it has yet to bloom for me, but has doubled the number of fans. I am hopeful to see blooms next year.

I also love this one it is not planted in the ideal spot, but still does very well plus the blooms are so beautiful. BE has been in my garden for years and will stay.

BEAUTIFUL EDGINGS flowers in the first week of November here and it is at full throttle at the moment. It has increased fast in two years from a single fan. It flowers well and is rust resistant. It acts as a semievergreen in the subtropics.

My favourite. You're lucky to have it in full bloom now, Glen. Here in southern Tasmania I'll have to wait another 3-4 weeks. In 2.5 years it has formed a lovely clump for me and I can see 6 scapes well on their way this season. Such a special daylily.

Purchased BE this July when it was in bloom. Scape was not self supporting. This October a lovely bloom that kept going til frost. The plant looks happy. Looking forward to next year.

Other side of the fence, here: exceeeeeeedingly slow to increase. Has beautiful blooms, however.

BE is one of my favorite daylilies!
Fast increaser, not a lot of buds but has tons of scape on my big clump.
Pods are easy.
It always has a nice pink edge.

This daylily is aptly named. So photogenic, it always takes great photographs. It does very well for me and opens beautifully all the years that I have it.

Here is a picture of mine, which was taken on June 23 of this year. Not sure if this was the first bloom, but if it wasn't, it was probably close. It was still blooming at the end of October on rebloom, and after moving it, it still had a couple of blooms at the beginning of this month. It didn't take much time off between the original blooms to end and the reblooms to begin.

I agree with everyone....this one is a favorite. Received it in 2009 from a DG trade. It came to Indiana from Texas. It had done well and and had increased but was not outstanding. 2 years ago I moved it to a spot where it gets more sun and it has really improved. I saw an increase in the number of fans, number of scapes and number of blooms. It is now where I can see it from the front window which is nice too.

It sets pods very easily here and I do not dab pollen! Height is probably close to 30 inches tall here. Blooms are held nicely above the foliage on strong scapes. I get no rebloom here. I tried to keep it well watered this summer in hopes that maybe I would, but no luck. I went back and checked photos for this year. I see It started blooming on June 26 and had its last bloom on August 25! So 2 months of blooms here in zone 5b. I would say that is outstanding performance!

Mine is going dormant but there is still a good bit of green foliage as of today.

I've grown this daylily for many years.

The one huge plus for me regarding this plant, is that it is rust resistant. I don't think I've ever seen rust on it, and that includes the year of my first outbreak (which was huge, because I wasn't paying attention and didn't immediately recognize what was going on), when a veritable rust factory was within a few feet of it.

A neutral plant trait (for me) is that it rarely reblooms here. Part of that may be due to the amount of shade that we get (most daylilies don't rebloom here in my garden, no matter how well I treat them), part may be due to my indifferent care. (For the most part my garden runs on benign neglect, though I do try to fertilize the daylilies at least once a year.)

The flowers are a beautiful pastel, and it is a plus for me that at 30", they are on relatively tall scapes. The flowers do not attain their registered 7" size here, but they are large enough to put on a good show. (The smaller bloom size may be another result of my "benign neglect"; the clump has not been divided (other than by the dog, hunting lizards) for several years.)

One downside of the flower is that the beautiful edging is somewhat photosensitive. The edging also is not as prominent here as I have seen it in some images; perhaps that is due to our arid environment - or maybe our cool nights? (The image below, from my garden, shows a typically colored bloom.) I have my clump planted on the west side of a red Japanese maple (which it goes very well with) to give it some morning shade, to keep such edging as I get as long as possible.



Another downside of the flower is that the blooms (at least in this garden) usually do not open properly. One or more of the tepals don't reflex properly, and have to be gently poked and prodded into shape, to show the true beauty of the bloom. (I had to do such prodding before I took the image above.) You can see these improperly opened tepals in the database image below.



To sum up how I feel about this plant: it is a nice enough landscaping plant, when positioned properly to provide it morning shade, and appropriately placed near something (like a red Japanese maple) to bring out the edging. Its rust resistance is a huge plus. The flowers are a lovely pastel, but they do need morning grooming (the poking and prodding) for the clump to look its best.

I agree that the pink edge does seem to vary here. Sometimes it being very prominent and other times almost non-existent. Often the first blooms here will not open well. Especially if it is very cool or the buds are crowded.

I chose Beautiful Edgings for my front Daylily bed and it has been a wonderful pastel foil among the other daylilies.
