I bought this bird cage at a 2nd hand/antique shop about a year ago. I would really like to put a plant in it, but I am open to suggestions. If a plant, what kind? The latch that holds the top in place to open/close it is broken, so I will have to close it with something..........a zip tie or a little clip. Because it was broken, I was able to talk them down in price. LOL

I suppose I should add that it is 27 inches tall and approx. 10 inches square.

I would want to keep the plant in a pot.

No, and I had not thought to use my friend "Google". *sigh*..................I could have done that and not posted. But, then, you would not have seen my cool cage! :>)

Oh no, that was not my point. Love love seeing this cage and want to brain storm this. I just didn't want to be redundant of what you might have done. I can not wait to see what comes of this. The birdcage has so much potential. ATP has so many talented people. Bev is really good at this too. @webesemps

If you wanted this to be outside in the summer Coleus would be pretty too. So many bright colors and there are some trailing ones too.

Julia, I think you provided some good links (and suggestions) for Anna to look at and contemplate about which direction to go.

Anna if you are thinking placement outside in the elements, I would suggest a good coat of Rustoleum for the cage before planting into it. If it will be in protected spot or indoors then maybe not. What light, wind and height exposure you decide on for placement of the cage might help to narrow down the types of plants you can consider.

If indeed the plant you decide on will stay potted in the cage and you want to soften or naturalize the look of the cage inside, there's a variety of moss (sphagnum(more spongy and moisture retentive) Spanish (more decorative) and reindeer (dyed, preserved for decorative)) that can be used to cover the pots. Or you may not want to cover a pretty pot!

I see a nice orchid inside, with various tillandsias hanging around easy enough to spray water as needed. Smiling

I agree with Bev if you are going to put a pot inside the cage I would surround the pot with moss. You can get it at the dollar store.

I love succulents so I immediately though of succulents hanging down. But if you are going with a house plant I still like to see something that drapes outside the bars. It is hard to see plants inside the bars.

I would look for plants that have pretty leaves. Flowers are fleeting but foliage is always.

The only thing I can think of is ivy but it is hard to keep the humidity it needs inside all winter in our climate.

Oh I know how about one of the many Wandering Jews. There is a pretty green/pink/white one and I like the purple one that Tiffany uses in all her pots. Purple passion is a pretty plant that is not hard to keep in doors in the winter it would look pretty hanging down.

Another easy colorful plant cryptanthus plants. They grow in pots and it could be the plant in the middle of the cage with your hanging plants.

I think a heartleaf philodendron in a pot would look awesome in that beautiful cage, they grow very fast and would look so nice filling out of the cage. Make sure you post your finished work Thumbs up

This is not my pic. I saved a copy of it to add to my screensaver, and don't remember where it came from by now.

Yes there are too many choices. I think it is too much so just send the cage to me. Rolling on the floor laughing
