I was just reading through these swaps trying to get an idea of how they worked and if I'd like to do it just for fun (don't really want/need any seeds with the exception of heirloom vegetables). I noticed under the topic "Questions", that it was said to consider even older seeds. I agree with this, while there are those few that are actually only viable (good) for one year. And I know of several that are good for only 2 years, including columbine (aquilegia) and delphinium (which are not listed on the following link). Here was a quick list of some common flowers, vegetables and herbs.

It really depends on how the seed is stored. I keep mine in the refrigerator. I've had delphinium seed sprout that is way older than 2 years. And ageratum seed can remain viable in the ground for many years. I was renting a house and had the backyard aerated. I got a huge stand of ageratum that I never planted that summer! My neighbor told me several years earlier another renter had planted ageratum there. My worst luck is with pansy/viola seeds but I think it might be because I try to germinate them in a room that is too warm.

@bxncbx you're lucky with the delphinium then. I too store the seeds in refrigerator and seldom get germination after 2 years. Same with columbine. I have no idea about ageratum, but that's interesting. Thumbs up

One thing that I did was to notice when seeds in my stash became embarrassingly old, like 2011 or 2012 seeds in 2015/2016.

Then I doubled up the old pkts so each held twice as much seed. The germination rate could go as low as 50% and they would still produce as many plants as the original packet when it was fresh.

Rick, your seed isn't embarrassingly old! I have a ton of seed from 2007 & 2008! I don't bother swapping them since no one would take them. But they germinate for me just fine. I just let the plants go to seed and give out the fresh seed. I believe the Linaria, Fairy Bouquet was from seed from 2004!

I agree with you about both: many seeds will still be highly viable after 5 years, maybe even ten. But I don't try to trade them past five or so years.

Thanks! What I was/am trying to do was/is calculate the cost for myself. I think swaps are fun; especially when the seed need or want is great. I haven't quite decided if I can justify, or if I need to just take the $7 and apply to an order that I know I will receive the exact 2 or 3 packets of heirloom tomato and pepper seeds that I want. *Currently* spreading finances a bit thin. Probably be better in a month or a couple; but then of course the swap will be over; or perhaps someone will run a veggie only swap. Shrug!

But I am wishing you and all that join in the greatest of fun, enjoyment, and lots of new seeds to try.

Don't forget to count the cost of sending seeds to DnD. That's at least $2.50, even in a weighed bubble mailer sent early enough for First Class mail to get there.

But I hope more "vegetable people" sign up!

To me, the hardest part of seed trading is listing oddball singleton seed packets. When I have only one of something but don't want it anymore, it seems like a lot of work to list just that one, older packet. But I used to join Heather's tomato and pepper swap, in Canada but accepting US members. So I have many odd packets getting older every year.

Ignoring for the moment how old they are and whether I already gave it away but fialed to reocrd that fact, do any of these sound desirable to you?

Rick, I just got my seed catalog from Peaceful Valley and a couple of the seed varieties I circled as 'think about buying' are in your list. The tomatoes I circled were intended to be part of a gift to a friend, so I have to consider if I'm okay giving her non-new seeds as a gift, but if I am, would you consider listing those varieties in the swap? (I'm willing to take my fair gamble at getting them. Big Grin )

I think I was a little confused as to Rick's post here, perhaps it appears some pre-arrangements to this swap were initiated. Because after further consideration last evening, I got out my Totally Tomatoes order form and decided I just needed to go that direction and order from them because they also had a couple other items (not seeds) that I wanted. So I will probably be set for the few seeds that I want. But I may join just to help out and donate some seeds. Is that a possibility without asking seeds in return? and not paying the $7? When considering this swap, I had started making the list here at ATP, but have no idea how to access the items I had posted for available.

Keyleigh, I don't see any harm in donating seeds, I'm sure people would greatly appreciate that! My recommendation is to join the swap, offer up the seeds you'll be donating (please note that you'll still be paying your own shipping to get the seeds here, of course), and just don't request any for yourself during the swap. If you don't request any for yourself, you won't need to contribute the $7 fee. If, after the swap starts, you get tempted by all of the goodies being offered up, you can change your mind and become a 'fully participating' member and just remember to send in the $7 like everyone else. You have the flexibility of deciding whether to 'fully' join or just donate. Smiling

Certainly I'll offer them IF I still have those varieties. And they could well have been received by me, in a trade, in 2011.

But you should make sure i do still have them first!

Which ones were you interested in? I'll see if I have them,
set them aside if I do, and then offer them in the swap.

With gardeners as experienced as many here at ATP, it can be difficult to find a seed variety that's interesting, that they have NOT yet bought and tried.

One person was interested in Omar's Lebanese "pink" tomato, 1-3 pounds. So I need to dig through the "Tomato" jug already.

Thank you for looking!

I am open to a variety, but the particular types I was looking at are:

Tomatoes:
Black Cherry
Siletz

If I decide I need another variety of pepper, I was interested in the Chocolate one.

...I might actually be interested in a couple of other tomato varieties, too. The ones I listed above just happened to be varieties I was looking at in the catalog that I wanted, but for the couple of other tomato varieties, I'll just see what's listed in the swap since I'm non-specific about it. OK, I'll check on Siletz, Black Cherry and 7-pot Chocolate chili pepper.

While I'm going through that jar, I'll see what I have multiples of and list some of them.

Most of my new listings will be seeds that just arrived or are about to arrive. They need to be split and labelled. I've printed the labels, but I need time and open table space to do the splitting.

Two and a half weeks to swap-start!

O know I still have Ildi, I saw them last night. I made a note to offer some.

Please don;'t split off anything you have few of, for me! I might not get them planted this year, so save rare things for others! For me, flowers are at most an entertainment. It's veggies I'm serious about.

I would love some self-saved Tithonia! Red, orange, and/or yellow, I hope? Whatever seems a good number, 10-20 would be good.

During a trade, I often hold off on requesting things they only offer one of, if I think others might have a more urgent desire than I do. If its still there after a few days, I'll grab it.
