The other day I ran across a beautiful daylily that knocked my socks off called Everyday Butterfly by Clyde Grammon. It was called an applique patterned daylily. I saw on past sales on the LA that it sold for hundreds of dollars. Just wondering if anyone fancies these applique patterned daylilies and how stable the applique pattern is turning out to be.........Maryl

what do you mean by stable, passing it on to seedling? or that it is consistent across all blooms on a single plant?

you mean Star of India, Lighter Than Air, Ariel Applique

Is that the trait you are referring to? I think all those are appliques

EVERYDAY BUTTERFLY is a stunning daylily. There are a few applique daylilies that I like - I tend towards the ones with a very strong, well defined applique. From what I know the applique is a stable feature - for example something like SPACECOAST SEASHELLS blooms well and consistently all season; and will pass the pattern on to its offspring.

Would this one be considered an applique?

I have ALEIN DNA it's parents are STAR OF INDIA X LIGHTER THAN AIR which is an applique. I don't think I have taken a picture, it is a beauty.

If Rorschach Test is a true applique, then here is what 2 of it's children looked like this past season:

Seedling #1 (ZZZ70):

Thumb of 2015-12-22/beckygardener/846d18

Seedling #2 (ZZZ71):

Thumb of 2015-12-22/beckygardener/da841d

The parents to these 2 siblings are "Hotter Than the Fourth of July" x "Rorschach Test". This was the first year they bloomed, so maybe the applique will become more pronounced over the next year or two .... or not. I won these 2 seedlings from Rich over a year ago. Unfortunately, they are both rust susceptible. Probably rusty 4.0 or higher. But I plan to use them in my hybridizing program because I love the colors and the interesting patterns on the bloom. And they were both taller than most of my other seedling's scapes. So they have good qualities, but the rust is an issue that I was disappointed about. Never fails. I find a daylily plant I love and it's rust susceptible. What's a daylily lover supposed to do? Sighing!

Yes Becky. Rorschach Test is the pattern that I was referring to. By stable, I mean each bloom will have the same pattern consistently. Since I don't hybridize, the pass along genetics don't interest me, but one of the quotes in the closed auction of Everyday Butterfly was this:

"EVERYDAY BUTTERFLY (GRAMMON 13)Hybridizer's description: Featured on MyDaylilies, Top 100--tied for #1 as a new seedling in 2010. Has produced amazing offspring--excellent parent for Applique and Patterns--especially nice UF's.You are bidding on a double fan in this extremely limited offering. "

The only picture I can find of it is the AHS registration picture:

Maryl - If you look in the database at Rorschach Test, you will see by the photos submitted that the applique pattern is NOT consistent with every bloom. Are they supposed to be?

Seeing as there is only 1 photo available of Everyday Butterfly .... how do you really know how great this applique daylily is? I am leery of not finding enough info on a cultivar. As a seller, what do they say to sell their plants? Are all sellers always truthful?

I like the image of Everyday Butterfly, very nice! Yes, Rorschach Test has an applique. The images in the database are a combination of mine and Rich Howards. I tested Rorschach for Rich before he intro'd it, the first image was from 2013. Second image was this years 2015. The other images in the database are ones I entered from Rich. I have not seen the applique as large here as he does in Ct.

Two others from Rich that I personally like better are Waggle Dance and Malala, they are siblings, both have great branching, hardy, easily fertile both ways. The applique is very consistent on both.

Catcher in the Eye was a favorite for many years until I lost the entire clump after an extremely cold open (no snow) winter a few years back. A parent of Spacecoast Sea Shells which was to tender here and went to a warmer zone.

Chinese Scribe is a favorite oldie that does well for me. The applique tends to vary year to year in size but is always there.

Bill has some fabulous applique and pattern seedlings!

I love Bill Maryott's intros, BUT ..... I always do a pedigree search before purchasing a cultivar. I have noted that quite a few of his have rust susceptible parents or grandparents in the genes. Sometimes it's on both sides of the parentage. So if you live in the "south", use the database here to go backwards to check out the pedigree genes before considering a cultivar. Even then a cultivar may or may not be rust susceptible. But I've often found that a rusty pedigree proves true for the children unless the cultivar has had breeding with highly rust resistant cultivars too, then you have a 50/50 chance of having a rust resistant child. For those of you up "north" who get freezing Winters, rust isn't a problem for you after the first year. Makes me wish I lived in the north ... sometimes. (But shoveling snow and long Winters would not suit me very well as a Florida Cracker with thin blood. Whistling Hilarious! Hilarious! Hilarious! Hilarious! )

Char - I think both Waggle Dance and Malala would be worth trying if you live in the south. I've always admired Malala. The other 2 have rust susceptible parentage (so I personally would not consider growing them here in FL since I am an organic gardener). Thanks for mentioning those! Very nice all of them! Thumbs up

This is a Tink seedling that I received in 2014, from her box of seedlings sale. Is this a applique? It was very consistent, as every bloom I saw looked the same, and it had pretty good stats, 32" scape, 4" bloom, average 4-5 branches, average 23 buds.

Really beautiful, Dot, and so are all the others pictured here! I've admired MALALA, WAGGLE DANCE and RORSCHACH TEST ever since they were introduced. And I do have a few daylilies with applique eyes now:

And I'm especially fond of my vigorous plant of ROSEATE STAINED GLASS and never really thought of it as an applique daylily -- but here is Pat Stamile's description of it:

"With a cream base, and a large rose colored eye, this beautiful flower sports a very large appliqué throat extending far out onto the sepals. ROSEATE STAINED GLASS has a double edging colored in rose and gold. Low arching foliage. Fertile both ways. "

So I guess it would be considered an applique daylily.

If you do an advanced search in the AHS database, with "spacecoast sea shells" as a parent, you will see many cultivars with an applique. That trait must be very strong in that cultilvar's genetics.

I am getting one this spring from another member of the club I belong to ..... "God's Mercy", Marlatt - J 2014, which is (Ultraviolet Mood × Spacecoast Sea Shells) I love that the bloom is very round and the color around the applique is darker like the edge on the petals and sepals. (another big plus for me is that it's 45" tall)

Judy Davisson also has two nice appliques, both out of "KICK OUT THE JAMS" :

I'm not particularly smitten with eyed daylilies or the patterns as seen on Get Jiggy. Patterns in particular seem rather variable from bloom to bloom and from climate to climate. So that's why this "applique" patterned one "Everyday Butterfly" kind of floored me. I like the darker colors with the contrasting lighter pattern effect. I guess I was asleep at the wheel because there are many you all have posted that are real beauties too - Malala, Catcher in the Eye, God's Mercy and way more. I will be checking them out to see about price and availablity. If this is a new trend in daylilies (again, not being a hybridizer I don't keep up with such things), I like it..........Maryl

Bob Selman at Blue Ridge Daylilies outside Asheville NC has a whole line of appliqued daylilies such as ALIEN DNA which was mentioned above. This year he has an intro called ALIENATION that to me is one of the prettiest appliques in that it is outlined in a dark purple. I have never seen that before, and I love it. From what I understand appliques are a stable trait that is passed on fairly reliably. Here is ALIENATION (hybridizer's pic):
