By popular demand, here is the continuation from our Anticipation 2015 thread. Smiling
We came from here
The thread "Anticipation 2015" in Orchids forum

Since it is January, the " red Spiranthes" are spiking

And happily my new Angraecum sesquipedale has a promising bud. I had lost my gorgeous, large plant a couple of years ago, it simply seemed timed out. This is now my replacement plant.

Ooo, looking great there. I am a bit less than thrilled to discover my Phaius tankervillea already spiking, at least 2 months ahead of usual. Guess I'll be out in the garden covering it up if we get our usual cold nights in January.

I'm sick to my stomach right now. First time I ever cut off dead / spent sheaths and I cut off the baby buds of a first time bloomer Catt for me. I apologized profusely to my Catt but I know she's going to be mad at me for quiet sometime. Grumbling Crying I am sooo soooo mad at myself. Grumbling Grumbling

On a good note here are more buds on the way. Now I'm worried that the cold season is going
To be here before they have a chance to bloom.

My nun orchid will put quiet a show in time for its usual late January/early Feb bloom but not too worried because this is in a pot.

Oh, Gigi that's too bad about the baby buds! I learned my lesson the hard way about cutting off the dry sheaths, too.

Don't worry too much about those Catt buds in your picture, this week it's not supposed to go much below 50 or so which is fine for them. Especially since yours is protected somewhat by that nice oak tree.

I bring my Catts into the house when it's predicted to go down to 40 or so. Otherwise they do fine with some cooler nights and they love the bright, cooler days behind the cold front to get a good drying out.

Today we have wind and chilly rain. Wish I had done my fungicide spray yesterday instead of fertilizing (which is no doubt all rinsing off the plants now). Oh well, I can spray everybody with fungicide on Monday when things dry out again.

Thank You! Ellaine, I sure hope to see them bloom. On the baby bud, never aGain! I never ever cut off dead sheats but I was getting it ready for a nice clean look before I go back to work on Monday and in preparation for the opening of 2 more buds just above it. Oh well, I will have to wait for next year for this Catt to bloom, although it has a new green sheath in one of its pseudobulbs that might still produce a bloom.

So many Spring flowering Catts do exactly that! Smiling They produce blooms from seemingly dead sheaths!
Gigi, you did a really good thing posting that here, I would think you just prevented a bunch of cut-off blooms, others reading this. And you are right, the plant is not lost and will bloom some more.

So right, and Gigi lots of Catts bloom more than once per year, so that plant may surprise you and bloom some more this spring. Most of my Catts bloom at least twice a year if they are healthy.

Thank You! Ursula and Elaine, I feel better now. Hopefully so, it will help others not to mess with dried sheaths of their Catts, their could be buds in their.

It was a nice day to work on my garden today, I got a lot of things done. I saw one more bulging green sheath from the Catt that I accidentally cut off the buds and the Chia Lin has another bud.

The Blc. Pamela Hetherington 'Coronation' FCC/AOS has two large buds now. She was in sheath over two months and I was beginning to think she would never pop that sheath. She's going to have large flowers. I have a division of a mother plant that has been owned by a guy in CA since the early 1980's. He says the plant had never been divided until he divided her in September, 2015, so that I could have the plant.

I remember him showing the 'Coronation' in bloom and we discussed this particular, special cultivar. I think now I have to find this thread! Smiling

Ah yes, go to Orchid blooms in January 2015, the conversation started on Jan 29. This particular cultivar was patented.

Ken, I added the link to my post. It was most interesting, wasn't it? Smiling
In any case, you are so lucky to have that plant and also having it in bud! Good for you! Thumbs up

I am so used to having "ordinary" orchids, hundreds and hundreds of them over the last five years, that having some that are sort of rare is kind of neat. I expect the Blc. Ports of Paradise Emerald Isle FCC to one day become a rare plant, though I may not be around to see it. That and the Rlc. Exotic's Summer Cloud FCC will always be two of my favorite plants.

We will be a balmy 62F on Saturday then all hell breaks loose. We won't get out of the 30's Sunday and I'll wake up Monday to the tune of 17F! Our lows the rest of the week won't be above the mid-20's. Ouch. Crying

I contacted a really well-known, really respected nursery and asked if they happened to have the 'Coronation'. The hybridizer/owner contacted me and said that he could take a division of his plant and the cost would be $150 plus shipping. Now I sort of know how "valuable" my and Ted M's plants are. I think my plant is just about ready to "pop" its flowers.

A little bit is going on in the S. Phal. (I have some more in the greenhouses as well), a nodosa, and the 'Coronation'. Here is also Plumeria 'K's Fuchsia Fantasy' growing another inflo.
