It reads 5 buds, 4 branches. What is that telling me? That there are 4 branches and one has two buds and the rest one bud each? Or does the scape generally have 4 branches with 5 buds each? It just seems like an odd description to me or I'm just really slow at the moment. I'm not computing what it's saying. Neither take sounds right somehow. TIA for clarification Smiling /

Registered bud count is 5, as in 5 total. I sorely doubt it truly preforms as such.

I really think it must be an error. I found this picture of it on Doug & Elaine Seifert's website, and you can clearly count more than 5 blooms/buds:

It sure is a beauty Smiling

True. Even in the description on the website, though, it repeats the registration numbers. It just doesn't seem credible that it would have 4 branches and only 5 buds.

The fact that it is registered as Goldner Webster means it is a dual registration. Although hybridized by Al Goldner, he didn't register it and someone named Webster registered it after his death. I don't know if that was Richard Webster or someone else w/ o pulling up the hybridizer lists on the Portal. Sometimes those who aren't familiar with registering make mistakes and think that when the registration sheet asks for buds ( right after it asks for branching) that it means buds PER branch rather than total buds for the entire scape. This has happened before, even Ned Roberts registered some this way (incorrectly) but I think all of those errors have since been changed. There are still some registered incorrectly in the DB by the registrants, who misunderstand the directions that bud count should reflect the entire scape bud count and not just the branch. My guess is that this registrant meant that this cultivar had five buds on each of the four branches, which makes more sense that it would have 20 buds per scape. That also reflects more what I've seen on this cultivar in gardens.

Webster's Pink Wonder was registered this incorrect way too, with regard to bud count, and I spoke to Rob Cobb( Richard Webster's grandson) who had actually done the registering. He mentioned that it had an abysmal bud count in TX where he lives, but that he was going to go back and change it. However, to the best of my knowledge, this was never followed through with. Regrettable, since it won the 2015 SSM.

It says that it is a late bloomer. Is that correct?

What a lovely bloom. Love the colors! Lovey dubby

Thank you so much. That was my best guess. I was hoping for a first-hand visual on the plant. It's currently tempting me on the LA. I might should have waited until it was gone to ask the question :).

Thanks again.

I've grown "Orange Clown" for years, and it has 15-20 buds for me, depending on the branching in a particular year. It is a late bloomer.

Donald, I bought Orange Clown from Possumhollow aka Karen on the LA and asked her about the same thing. Her response in an email was that there was an error in the registration process. She gave me some numbers back then. I will have to search for it to be more specific in her answer. As we all know, she is a great source for Goldner's daylilies. A GREAT Lady to do business with. I highly recommend her unequivocally.

If you want something with the form and color of Orange clown, but with more height, (I think that big bloom looks better on a taller scape), check out "Mister Monopoly" and "Tall Girls". They both have a double dose of "Orange Clown".

I don't grow "Tall Girls" (yet), but I do grow "Mister Monopoly" and it's a favorite. (these photos were from it's 2nd year in my garden)

Actually, I didn't realize it, but so does "Miss Demeanor"

I do like them taller and have minimum height requirements. However, I do grow them in large containers which elevates the blooms along with the plant another 2'. I've been leery of the really tall, tall ones. I doubt most plants will reach registered heights under my growing conditions, but the daylilies are managing that feat a lot better than tall bearded iris do. Iris aren't container grown here very much. Some of them object to that situation for some reason.
