Donald's post made me think that maybe someone has some ideas on a good dark purple for my area. Think Bela Lugosi, Mary's Baby. I need a darker purple that doesn't brown, blotch, bleach, fade or slick . In my area neither roses nor daylilies are really purple, rather variations on a maroon color, but the picture of Mary's Baby is fairly accurate as to what I've come to accept as purple. Kind of a deep bluish maroon.......I know. Tall order.......Maryl (P.S.) Also, If anyone grows Sledge Hammer I'd like to know your experience.

I'm not sure Maryl, but I grew 'My Soul Surrendered' which I received as a bonus. It didn't bloom blotchy and did really well. I gave it to my brother-in-law in Houston and I'm curious as to how it will do for him in the wetter, more humid climate. I expect my climate is a lot like yours - hot, dry and windy. I've had a lot of the purples blotch, especially on the first blooms, but this one didn't. I liked it a lot and was really tempted to keep it. If it does well in it's new home I can get some back easily enough, I think. Anyway, here's a photo from this year. I'm sure you're going to get lots of other suggestions.

Last year was the first year here for 'Super Purple' but I really liked it.
I bought my plant from In The Neighborhood Daylilies (sold out) but I see Cheryl's Daylilies has it for $5.00.

Jungle Beauty might be a little too dark for you, but it's a purple that holds its color well.

I had Sledge Hammer, but the marker was lost and I may have moved it or given it away. Hilarious! What I remember is that it is slow to increase, but do not remember much else.

Have a slew of dark ones, but they are heavily weighted to the mahogany/deep red-browns like Black Briar Bay. These are as close to true purple as I have:

It is susceptible to rust, though, if this is important to know.
The problem is that when you are young your life it is ruined by your parents. When you are older it is ruined by your children.

Bill Maryott has some very nice dark, true purples. I have DINNER TALK, PURPLE PASHMINA, and GRAPE PRETENDER which all do well here. Of those I think it's PURPLE PASHMINA that is the darkest.

Thanks Donald for the suggestion. Our weather is somewhat similar and you know what damage the summer sun can do to dark colors even if given PM shade. DogsnDaylillies: Appreciate your input. I'm not overly fond of really black daylilies, but will give yours a look-see....Debra: At least you don't remember Sledge Hammer as a fader. I grow in pots, so overly vigorous daylilies are not a plus really, just as long as it's at least a moderate grower, I may still try it. Darker Shade is already on my list, so glad to hear you recommend it......Mary: Purple Kaboom is sure nice and thanks Glen for suggesting Jamaican Midnight. I will do some research on everyone's suggestions.........Maryl

It was really this line that caught my attention. 'My Soul Surrendered' did fade a bit, not badly and stayed attractive. For me it wasn't ever blotchy or brown. It was in full sun most of the day, but in the late afternoon it got shade from the house. It did grow in a container. Also, I only kept it long enough to see it bloom, so it only bloomed summer 2015 and was re-homed this fall. Not long term experience. I did note that it managed my conditions better than many of my darker varieties. Especially no blotching. It also was a nice one for good foliage.

Thanks again Donald. I accept some fading of course. Even Bela Lugosi doesn't look prime at 7 PM after a day in the 90's, but it's still a recognizable deep purple. I know this color is hard to come by and presume that's why the purple "Larry's Obsession" was named as such - because a good purple (like a mate) is hard to find.........Anyone grown Evening Enchantment perhaps?.......Maryl

Part of the color change is due to the lighting when I took the photos, but it is darker on some days too.

Strutter's Ball is a great purple in my garden. It's planted in partial shade under a pine tree and the color is steadfast throughout the day.

Maryl, here is another purple that I think is beautiful. I don't have it and can't speak to the steadfastness of the color, but I love it.

Maryl,
I grow Evening Enchantment, and I love it. It holds it's color beautifully, even when our temps hit 100. I live in SC, zone 8b. Another reason that I like it...it has a great green throat; it's so green that it is hard to sometimes get a good picture because my iPad can't focus on the green and the purple at the same time. It does not fade or slick here, but it does get some very late afternoon/evening shade.
First flower open was May 20th. It rebloomed here, so it continued flowering well into July. I've had it for two summers, and it has formed a nice clump.

Soli Deo Gloria was a real star here last season, on a large, spring-planted double fan. It opened well despite cool nights, and held its color very well throughout warm days under, dry, cloudless skies. It came directly from Karol Emmerich, and performed exactly as she describes—a bit of water-spotting or thrip damage on the first couple of blooms, and nearly flawless after that.
