Hiya Smiling

The time has come to banish our 10 year old king sized mattress from the bedroom !
LOVE the roominess (when the dogs allow it) .. but, there is one thing about a king sized mattress everyone failed to mention to us .. I call it the 'BUMP' Whistling
One person sleeps on their side of the bed, and the other person sleeps on theirs .. nobody sleeps SMACK in the middle Sad
Sometimes you 'meet in the middle' for a bit of friendly discussion, but, inevitably you both return to YOUR side of the bed ..
The years go by, and, suddenly .. 'meetin in the middle' is an UPHILL battle, because of ,'the BUMP'.. you put up with it for a bit, but, finally common sense knocks you on the bean and says .."TIME FOR A NEW MATTRESS' ..

Due to a circumstance that may or not be to our advantage .. we have about $600. in Sears coupons, if you'd like more on WHY I have them, read the 'washing machine' thread ..

I would appreciate some suggestions with regards to what type to buy .. the 'BUMP' is a pillow top .. I think I shall stay away from that type ..

We live in Canada .. and, I am budgeting about $1300. ... I already have the box spring ..

Thanks a bunch ..

'The BUMP Bandit' Shrug!

We bought a new mattress and took a chance on a Memory Foam mattress from Sam's Club. We love it. It is very comfortable, not hot as some have complained about Memory Foam, and the best part? I don't feel it when DH moves all around at night. "He is a very *active* sleeper!) We did not buy top of the line (the thicker the foam the more expensive) But we got the 13" Queen size for a very affordable $400 delivered in a long box. Laid it on the box spring, opened the plastic and watched it unfold. It did not smell. And we slept like babies starting the very first night. (My dog did that ~~> ;........................lllllllllllllllllll6tuy)

Here's a hint. We bought a 6 memory foam topper (Ebay)to go on top of our old mattress to try it out and also to extend the life of our old mattress. It worked. We slept on it soundly for about 3 years before buying the new one. It also gave us a clue on how we'd love our Memory Foam mattress. DD loved it so much. we cut it down to fit her mattress. It's still up there!

Yes the toppers are great but if your old mattress is no longer structurally sound (like: the BUMP) it won't help.

We always buy Simmons Beautyrest brand, used to have 20 year guarantee, we had our queen for 20 years! Now they only have 10 year guarantee but they are still amazing mattresses. We got our new one last year at Sears, it was under $1000 for the queen set. Also the kids rooms have Beautyrest and SO comfy.

Thanks for the links and comments ..

Hetty has hit the nail on the head re the 'structural soundness' of the mattress ..
We bought a large piece of memory foam, or 'egg crate' from Amazon .. a beautiful blue colour .. 2" thick ..
Let it out of its shrink wrap and let it settle out for 13 hours .. it is a California King, so, it does fold over the foot of the bed about an inch .. just enough to make the mattress cover and sheets let go Confused
Anyway .. it felt so nice the first week .. and then 'the bump' again became a factor .. I would try to turn over, and I was fighting gravity Shrug!

Sears sells Beautyrest .. just am BLOWN AWAY Sad at the cost of a mattress .. but .. you go with the flow Sighing!

Again ... thanks so much for the input

My parents bought a name-brand, queen size mattress from Sears and it collapsed in the middle after about two weeks. My parents aren't big people, either. Sears was an absolute jerk about getting it replaced. They ended up buying a mattress off the internet. I'll try to find out the details from them later and post that info for you.

Our Memory Foam came from Overstock. But since Maryanne has a credit with Sears that won't do her much good.

The crappy queen mattress that my parents bought from Sears was a Sealy Posturepedic. My Mom said it started dipping in the middle after 3 days. Like I said before, they aren't big people. Sears had awful customer service!

My parents bought a queen mattress from this website that they still like, going on a year now.

However, I checked and they deliver to Ontario but only 75 miles outside of Toronto. That is very far from you! They said they will be expanding deliver to more of Canada in 2016.

Sorry, that wasn't of much help! Shrug!

We have a large Sears store here .. and, the terms of this 'coupon agreement' states it has to be ONE purchase, not an online purchase, but, IN store.
I almost feel nauseated typing that .. I am someone who just HATES restrictions after I have followed through on MY part of the deal ..
LIVE and LEARN, which is part of the reason I am here to warn you all about reading the fine print, and, ASKING for clarification .. I had taken the agreement to read/mean .. the amount I put out initially ($245.00) would be used against my next extended warranty purchase in 3 years if I had not had a repair done. NOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Apparently I totally missed the part about the $$ being a COUPON with iron clad restrictions Grumbling

I have yet to darken Sears door .. but, it will happen soon .. the 'coupons' are here, and I only have 90 days to use them ..
After all the ANGST I want to make sure I have a WARRANTY on the product (Mattress) that I did not have to PAY for ..

And, the beat goes on Smiling Whistling Shrug!

Remember the days when if the mattress failed before the warranty time...a person came to the house just like with any outher failure of appliance?

Noooooo more...nope...

I had my mattress for 2 months when I noticed the lower part ( under the actual pillow top ) had 'slippage ' of the fabric. I took a photo for you. I worried that the whole system might sag --not knowing if the fabric fitting well was cosmetic or structural.

So I called.
They ( Sears ) sent an envelope FILLED with instructions ...get a string and a level.....get a ruler ....if the distance below the leveled string stretched from end to end....is more than........( THIS process was for SAGGING - and so not my problem at all )!...then they want photos and a descriptive note...

I do not know if this is Sears or the manufacturer's new method.
Honestly, I had no energy. I figure if it gets worse or something bad happens......I will put effort then.

This is a photo of the ill fitting fabric. A year later there are no issues.

The mattress (a Serta I Series) is VERY comfortable.
Magic gel, Super foam, Organic cotton, Downy moss 🤑 layers....7 like a salad!!!! I trialed (< iPad says that is not a word, but I am keeping it ) one at home before this one. A Sterns and Foster super imperial grand mansion wonder castle...something.......That one was much firmer. ....felt great in the store for a quick lay down......but after a night...oh no. I kept it for a month...I called the next day ( post the month)!...Sears said I had to keep it for 90 days or pay a restock fee! They said " it takes 90 days to adjust " this one I have now is $700 bucks cheaper than that big daddy and so restock fee prohibitive.

I told them that I was sending a certified letter about my incompatibility with that mattress and if made to sleep on it for 90 days..I expected Sears to pay for all medical bills related to distress- poor sleep (mental) and all ortho issues. They took it back that week.

This one we have now ...I am very happy with. It has been about a year and so far no bump (which I think starts to form rather quickly )

No bouncing if the partner turns over.

It does NOT tear my skin off or break my back to lift the mattress for a linen change or to stretch the contour sheet around like MOST new ones that are not all foam do. A HUGE requirement for me.

It has a low profile (? 4 inch ) boxspring which as we age...I thought important -- easy to slide in and out of without a step stool! 😆 You may want to be sure if you keep your boxspring that the warranty is valid on the mattress since it is supportive.

The corner that you see that heads down..that is not sag..there is no support on that 'comfort ' top at the corners. It is not a true pillow top We don't sleep up there at that corner or sit up there. I wondered about that in the store since it is like that on all.

Many come with 7 year warranty... this I believe has ten.
I got a good mattress cover...not plush but protective. No plastics.

PS years ago the pillow top was on both sides to flip. This is one-sided as were all we looked at. This mattress supposedly needs no flipping or turning.

Last...several friends have the foam one that cannot be bought in brick and mortar stores. I can get the name if you want.

It comes straight to house and goes back out ( mail ) the same way if not satisfactory. THEY LOVE IT. Was rated best mattress and owned by that guy that blogs about mattresses. He says he paid for it....no compensation. Accepts no advertisers.

Rosie .. lots to 'chaw on' Smiling
Still LOL re 'Don't squat with your spurs on' LOVE it Hilarious!

Our present mattress is a pillow top (almost type 'pillow talk') .. and, I flipped the bugger ..
OMG .. I got it up standing, and, thought I could reach down and pull it up .. well sunshine .. ain't NO WAY that was going to happen .. .. so, help arrived, and KERPLOP .. the down side is firm, but, it ain't fancy !
However I thought, "WOW .. this is too sweet" .. got into bed (and YES, the next mattress will not be a high boy" !! The binding kinda hurt my leg as I got in, but, I sucked it up .. I laid down, and went 'AHHHHhhhhhhhhhhh' .. just a pleasure to feel the firmness .. BUT .. 10 days, and, the BUMP factor started to appear .. arggggghhhhhh Rolling my eyes.

I have no idea if the box spring (2 twins) is causing the problem, I kinda thought they were sort of a forever thing .. we had a water bed prior to this king sized beastette .. so, I can't remember Whistling

Thanks for all your info Rosie .. and .. our pillow top has that droopiness to it as well .. must be the pillow top Confused

Toodles

Marilynn, we went from a king waterbed to a California king "zero gravity" bed system. It's a gel-foam top and we just LOVE it. It's soooo comfortable. In order for each of us to have our own "adjustment" control, we had to go with the Calif. king. If we'd have gotten a Queen, there would have only been one adjustment, which would not have worked. The whole outfit cost us 3 grand, but it's the best $$ we've spent on something like that. I still liked the waterbed (it had baffles), but it was giving the Spousal Unit backaches and I just got tired of listening to him rag about it. In all fairness, I should say that we had the waterbed for 30 years. Rolling on the floor laughing

We bought this locally, didn't go to a big box store in the larger city. This place sells used and new appliances, plus beds. I bought my pre-owned washer from them and it's running great.

We bought a new mattress before hubby's back surgery, hoping that might be an easier fix (not). I let him shop/buy it since he was the guy with the aching back. All I can say is newer beds are way too TALL for me. I can no longer sit on the bed to put my socks on, I have to jump up. We've never had 'sides' of the bed so I don't notice either a sag or bump in the middle. But, I think our next mattress will likely be one you can dial-in as I like a much harder bed than Gary (now I'm the guy waking up with an ache, although once I get moving it goes away quickly). Memory foam gives me the heebie-jeebies, so that's off the table.

Ours isn't a "memory foam", it's a "gel foam." I think there is a difference.
