I agree, both plants are varieties of Dieffenbachia: http://garden.org/plants/brows... and they are toxic: http://www.miamiherald.com/new...

Hi Jennifer. @jvdubb

The nickname for Dieffenbachia is Dumb Cane...Eating any part of the plant results in temporary difficulty or inability to speak. The culprit is Raphides.

"Raphides are needle-shaped crystals of calcium oxalate as the monohydrate or calcium carbonate as aragonite, found in more than 200 families of plants. Both ends are needle-like, but raphides tend to be blunt at one end and sharp at the other."

The plants may be toxic but unless you eat them they won't do you any harm.

ajbjoy must have pets that she is concerned about possibly "tasting" her plants.

Some pets have a tendency to munch on house plants which can cause major health issues. I've had many pets over the years and was lucky that all except one was easy to train to stay away from the plants. We did have one kitty who liked to munch on my African Violets from time to time ... fortunately that was the only plant she took a liking to for some reason. African Violets are not toxic but it was Sad to walk into the room at times to find her happily grazing on a pretty Violet!

A list of plants that are toxic to cats as well as the list of dog toxic plants can be found at the ASPCA site: http://www.aspca.org/pet-care/...

I do have a dog and he is a chewer! He is a rescue and spent two years in a crate 24/7 and developed a nervous chewing habit! So I put up plants in case he decides to chew them! He wears a muzzle because he chews cigarette butts on the ground! But yes... that is why asked about toxic to pets.
