Gorgeous pink flowers! I grew it for the first time during 2013 and loved it. I had it in a container along with 2 other salvias. I didn't like that small ants were attracted to the flowers.

I agree with Marilyn. It has gorgeous flowers and big, glossy leaves but the ants swarm this plant. It's been a few years since I've grown it but, despite the annoying ant problem, I would grow it again because it's just so pretty. Definitely keep it away from sidewalks or near the house where attracting ants or brushing against ant-filled flowers would be a problem.

Danita,

I agree with everything you stated. I had it on the patio, but would have it in a container away from it. In fact, I got it again from FBTS in 2014 and planted it by itself in a container and it didn't grow well. Might have been too much shade where I had it, planting it into too large of a container right after it arrived in its small pot or both.

I grew it for 3 or 4 years and finally left it to freeze. It was a unreliable performer for me, one year spectacular and the next not so much. There is no question that when it is happy it is absolutely spectacular and even at its worst it was something to see. But hummingbirds didn't take much interest in it, and to get a really fine plant it needed to be wintered inside as a large specimen. When I see the dead stems out in the garden I feel sorry that it is gone but also think I was right to leave it behind.

Like a number of other South American species, this one is slow to develop in the spring. Ours don't hit stride until June, and then they grow rapidly. Much like tomatoes for us - put out early they just sulk. Planted when the soil is warm and the days longish they rocket up. Getting maximum light without bruning the leaves with hot sun takes a bit of thought. But worth it.

I agree the ants swarm oxyphora and also hummers don't give it a lot of attention(probably because of the ants), but this salvia is just too unique and cool-looking to get rid of. It doesn't need much space so it's easy to find a couple spots in the garden in which to grow it.

Dan,

I might have to try oxyphora again and just deal with the ants on it. Hilarious!

It is everything you stated above! Lovey dubby
