These are seeds I planted a week ago. I did nothing to them just laid them on soil and lightly covered them.

What type are they? I have had fairly good luck with most types I have tried so far.

I planted 100 after knicking them slightly with a razor and then soaking in warm water for about 8 hours. Let them sit in a humidity dome on a heat pad and after a month I got 6 seedlings.

Maybe next time I will do what you did Doris and go simple.

Gerald, I use nail clippers to nick most seeds .. so very easy! The key is to take SMALL bites no more than slivers until you see the kernel which is usually white or a cream color. All you need to do is break the seed coat.

The picture is of an old Hibiscus coccineus - not viable. You can clearly see the seed coat and kernel inside. Remember take small slivers until you see the kernel.

Will this work for Hibiscis Roselle? So far only one has germinated.

@Xeramtheum That is an excellent idea, using nail clippers. I was fighting with a razor and tweezers, which was a pain.

For really large round seeds with a very hard or thick coat I dent the coat with wire cutters and use toe nail clippers. For seeds like canna and lotus with very hard and thick coats I'll use the wire cutters to dent and a dremel with a cutting blade on it or a hack saw. If you try that, DO NOT HOLD THE SEED WITH YOUR FINGERS. Use pliers.
