Thread OP

I happened upon this lonely pair as I walked to the mailbox. I've searched every seed site I could find, but can't find anything like them. I'm not sure if they're even seeds at this point... Any ideas? Sighing!

Welcome! to ATP. You might want to sacrifice one and explore the interior. Post a photo of that and it'll be easier to ID. It looks like a pod full of seeds and there appears to be a seem on one side where it would split open. Or not. The insides will all.

icscott Welcome! to All Things Plants!

I agree with HamiltonSquare, slice one down the middle and see what you find. Post another photo of both the whole seed and the one sliced in two pieces. Alos, a photo might show up with a bit more clarity if they are laid on a white background like a paper towel.

Also, can you tell us the part of the country/world where you found the seeds? You don't have to be exact, some folks don't like listing their exact city where they live but you could say for instance, East Central N.Y., Southern Florida, Northern Virginia, etc. That would at least narrow down what types of plants grow in the area and could possibly help with an exact ID as to what plant the seeds came from.

Welcome!

If you could give us some idea of:

1) The size of the pods

2) What plants are nearby, e.g. is there an overhanging tree or a shrub nearby.

As you found two, it's likely they dropped off something nearby.

As Lin suggested, location helps.

Except for the "seam" they could be some sort of galls. (I was here looking for an answer too.)

If you could answer these questions you might get an answer.

Identification isn't always about recognising something, with more information I can search for e.g. galls which may be found on a specific plant. Smiling

Good eye @porkpal, Those could very well be galls!

@icscott, For comparison, check out some of these photos:

Hmmm. Some of those pictures would even account for the "seams"...
