This tree that had its tap root cut at age 6 weeks was up-potted from a 5" pot to an 8" panterra bowl last May. It has since outgrown its container and has distorted its pot.

Excavated and some media brushed off.

Now up-potted into a 10" bulb pot after fine roots were trimmed off to the new level of media:

Now the following trees did not have tap root cut and was up-potted today:

The trees are all approximately the same age. I like both forms that result from cut vs. uncut.

Those above were from my very first time growing adeniums from seeds in Aug. 2014, a year and a half ago. I am getting ready to transplant and cut tap roots of recently grown seedlings. So really, I'm still learning as far as best time of year for doing things with adenium seedlings in my area.

Thanks, Willeke! Big Grin The roots extending from the caudex are fun to watch grow and develop. Each and every one is distinctive from the other. Even after lifting, the roots will continue to grow bigger and the shape/form will change a little bit.

Mark, here's an illustration that shows a cut line:

I cut my tap root higher up and closer to the first set of fine roots.

Thank you! Now, is this a good time of year to cut? How old of a plant does it have to be? I have a very small one and a grown one...would love to try it. Out on the small one..

You're welcome, Mark! I looked at the weather forecast for San Diego and it seems to be okay for cutting roots at this time.

To get the fat caudex/root extensions, I cut the tap root when my seedlings were between 6 to 8 weeks old and had 5 to 6 sets of true leaves. But then, my weather makes the seedlings grow faster so perhaps for your climate or situation, older than 8 weeks would probably be okay.

Here's a couple of trees that I had cut the tap roots around 4 to 5 months old.

The following is an example of root growth after cutting off all the roots. I think it was 5 months old at the time I sliced off at the widest part of the caudex.

If I had wanted to I could have trained the roots to look like this one (not mine)...too much work. Sticking tongue out

Thank You! for this thread and the linked article. I'm so excited to start my Adenium adventure in the next few weeks when I move my seedlings from the seedling tray to pots.

The little one's caudex is nice and fat and the multiple stems coming out of the top looks great.

Mark, if this were mine I would cut the tap root at just below the two feeder roots that I can see in the photo. Also trim the feeder root to about 2 inches from the base. Dip the cut end into rooting hormone powder, including the feeder roots and 1/2 inch up the base. Plant in moist media in 5" pot spreading the feeder roots and bottom water the pot. Leave in bright shade away from direct sunlight for about 2 weeks. If the media should look and feel dry then you could water again. Gradually introduce the tree to direct sunlight for about a week, then full sun. Apply a liquid starter solution weekly for two weeks.

If you need further info or clarification, please do let me know...glad to help! Smiling

I tip my hat to you.

It will take about 2 months for new roots to become firmly established, then the tree will "take off." I look forward to seeing your tree's blooms!
