Hi All,

I was wondering if there would be any interest in a southeast regional gardening forum?

Being in Georgia, I don't feel like there is really any place to post about regional topics since GA doesn't fit in any of the current regional forums. I do like to read along on the Texas forum since the east has sort-of similar conditions but I don't want to post a bunch of GA related topics there. I know that there used to be a GA forum that, understandably, got deleted due to inactivity. However, if members from several southeastern states were posting on a forum, I think it would have a better chance of thriving.

Would any other of you southeasterners enjoy a regional forum?

Thanks much! Smiling
Danita

My state is in the Southeast region but there is already a Tennessee forum. Maybe it could be included in a Southeast regional forum.

Danita,
Being a gardener in Alabama I have the same feelings you do about Georgia, and I would love to see a Southeastern forum.I think Florida and Tennessee have their own forums, but Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, and South Carolina, I don't think really have a "home forum" here on ATP.

Count me in. Sounds like a good idea. I'm in Georgia (Savannah) and have not "found a home" on the several available forums when I have a region-specific question.

If one were to start a thread...maybe in the "All Things Gardening Forum" Shrug! , to get the ball rolling, Dave may be willing to add a forum if there is enough interest and activity. Thumbs up Once we have a forum we can branch off with specific threads for the different areas with specific needs. Thumbs up

I'm in Florida and we do have a specific forum for our state but I know growing conditions in other parts of the Southeastern U.S. are very different than what they are here in Florida. I have a sister in South Carolina and she can grow many things that won't grow here in Florida and vice versa. I think a specific forum for Southeastern Regional Gardening would very much be enjoyed by many members in that part of the country.

Even though there IS a Florida forum, living in the northern part of the panhandle is very different from south Florida...so perhaps a southeastern forum would be a better fit.

So, what would differentiate the Southeast Region from the Mid-South Region? I do so wish that the regional forums all had some sort of key as to what areas they refer to.

Thanks for the feedback everyone! Big Grin Tell your friends! Hilarious!

Woofie, the Mid-South is farther north and to the west. There is some obvious overlap of areas also considered as being in the Southeast. The problem is that there seems to be no formal definitions of the different regions. Georgia, however, is definitely NOT in the Mid-South.

According to Wikipedia, "The Mid-South is an informally-defined region in the United States, usually thought to be anchored by the Memphis metropolitan area and consisting of West Tennessee, North Mississippi, the Missouri Bootheel, Southern Illinois, Western Kentucky, Central and Northeast Arkansas, and Northwest Alabama."

For the Southeast, see map:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/...

To my mind, it is the similarity in climate (humid, subtropical) that is the most important factor, rather than state borders.

Thanks for the clarification, Danita! Heh, never even thought to look up those areas in Wikipedia. Now, if someone would just include those descriptions on the front of the forum pages... (hint, hint).

I concur with Ginger- I live a mile from Georgia and about 15 miles from Alabama. A southeast forum would be a much better fit than peninsular Florida. Being able to hear from other folks what kind of microclimate they needed to grow things on the edge of acceptability would be wonderful.

Just on that issue alone, I have big, beautiful stands of Mountain Laurel up by my northern creek. They are on an exposed bluff overlooking the creek from the south edge so they get the colder winds and exposure than other things on my property. The plants are huge and have been there for decades. Never thought I could have that here, but It's there!

That sounds like our weather in KY. Hilarious! Sighing!

There have been times in different years, that our temps were hotter than Atlanta, Orlando or Miami. Don't know about some other cities, we just checked those.
