Do you keep a catalog type of sheet on your irises. I am thinking of doing them up for the irises I have and also on order. I was going to put the name, year of registration and year of intro, parentage if known, ifs its a tall beard, dwarf etc..

Richard, I use my plant list for a lot of that information - of course, if you have time,
the more cataloging you do, the better. I get behind on just making maps! Blinking

Yes, I keep a "grow list" on the computer......with the name of the iris, hybridizer, year of registration / introduction, class (IB, TB, whatever) ,height, season (early, late, whatever), and it's location (which bed, or area it's planted in. I also print out the AIS page on the iris, and , on the back, note where I got the iris, which bed it's in, and any "notes" on it I might need later (when it first bloomed, if I had insect, or disease problems, etc.)

here's a pic of one of the "sheets'. I keep them in binders.

I have spread sheets with type, class, name, hybridizer, bloom time, year, where and when I acquired it, etc. I add the date it blooms in my garden each year. I have a map of every bed which has to change yearly as I move them about.... with photos of each one. Even the noids get this treatment.

I have a spreadsheet of my irises as well. It is done by acquisition date of the cultivar. I have hybridizer, year, type (TB , SDB, ect) how many rhizomes, bloom time (E, M, L), from where w/date, and then special notes (like RE, PBF, DM award). Things like parentage and flower type (self, plicata) I can look up in various places and is not needed.

Lazy, here--I use the notes section of my ATP plant list. Hilarious!

I also have a spreadsheet. Iris name, listed alphabetically, date of acquisition and where I got the Iris, Hybridizer and year introduced, brief description including color and type (I only specify those that are SDB's -- the rest are automatically TB's), location in my beds. Across the same line in the spreadsheet is a list of where in my picture files a photo (or two or three or more) of each Iris can be found.

My records aren't as detailed as they could be, but the information that is most important to me is there. And maintaining my spreadsheet doesn't take a huge amount of time -- important to me.

I do as Debra does. I need to have my niece come over and help me make a map of where I have everything. Right now I have it in my head but as I get older (and the iris more abundant), I'm going to need it.

I keep an old fashioned 3x5 card catalog of all the iris. This is in alphabetical order and contains description, hybridizer, date acquired and cost, awards and parentage.

I also keep a yearly combination notebook, bloom log and map on a clip board that I carry around during bloom season. Bloom dates and miscellaneous garden notes go in here as I work in the gardens. There is a separate photo log in this.

I have a basic spread sheet that just keeps track of name color and garden location.

Also try to keep an updated plant list here on ATP

I have both a spreadsheet and I use the ATP plant list. I also keep a notebook for each season that lists the blooms on each date and problems that may be noted. I mark that in code on the spreadsheet.
My maps are a little disorganized and messy but I do keep one. Most have metal plants markers but that can always be misplaced by critters and neighbor kids. I should use graph paper or something more spacial.

Yes, since I planted my first 2 Iris gardens last year, I have kept very detailed records of all of the Irises I have planted - where they were purchased from (have kept all receipts), and a map locator of where each Iris rhizome is planted, since they are in 2 different garden locations. All had name Markers put in place, but last Month upon inspection, I noted many name Markers were either missing or broken during the course of the Winter, so thankfully I had a Map showing where each Iris was planted.

I have a spreadsheet too. Iris name, listed alphabetically, date of acquisition and where I got the Iris, Hybridizer, and year introduced, (98 percent of what I have are TB's so I don't specify type) photo date, and the parentage.
When I purchase additional Iris I add the current date to my master list so I know when it was updated last.

QuickBooks 2013.. Couldn't pass up the price. Very flexible, supports attaching a photo to each inventory item. You can get as detailed as you want.

You are all much more detailed than me. First I do have maps of all my gardens, and update them whenever things are added or moved.
I keep a list of every iris ordered by year, type, and description on my computer. I also have a photo folder for each year's blooms and a folder with thumbnails of all those I ordered. I also enter the iris on my ATP iris list. And I keep a log of each first bloom of the iris each year by date.

Wow, everyone is organized. I have a notebook where I list irises ordered that year. Organized by type there. Once in the garden they are on their own, although seedlings have their own beds. I will lose plants that way & it is my own fault. I should list the plants in each bed this year as John has been doing all the weeding as I have been unable to do so.

I have a 99 cent white binder with college ruled paper. This way I can change pages right around if needed. Every plant in my inventory list in alpha order. I keep track like a journal with random date logs. Emerging bloom stalks, bloom dates, height, avg bud count, dates fertilized, dates received and planted.
I don't keep track of vigor...yet or inventory.

My fear is one day all computers will crash(they won't) and all data will be lost.
Gimme it and I'll grow it!
