In reading some of the threads about the Orders members are placing, and seeing the large number of rhizomes being ordered by some, I'm curious as to the type of properties members have - do you live on a farm? do you live out in the country with a large amount of property? I'm amazed at the
number of iris rhizomes members order each year. Where do you plant them all ? Smiling

I would like to go to a larger piece of land so I can have a better laid out garden. Right now the wife and I are just under 1/5 an acre,

Believe it or not I live in a subdivison. We bought 2 1/2 acres on a private piece of land in the back of the neighborhood that backs up to a nature conserve so nothing can be built behind us. It's all trees that lead down to a big lake. our back yard has a severe drop off that then flattens out for an acre, which I am convinced this is where they took all the dirt from excavating the entire neighborhood and filled in a holler. my Iris are all over my yard front and back of the house gardens, fence line gardens and then the back field is now rows of Iris. And quickly growing. I love them there because no one can get to them. And the neighbors that can see them love them.
This is an old picture from 2 years ago. There's a lot of change since then. We completely rebuilt the rock creek that runs down through the back yard and I have louisanna Iris lining the creek now that I got last year for an ever so generous ATP memeber! I'll have to take a new one soon. When things are in bloom.

I live on a farm with about 5 acres around the house where I can garden. I have to keep myself in check, it is easy to add more beds than I can maintain.

I also live on a farm. The property surrounding our home is where I plant and maintain my Iris beds. Like Jen, I have Irises in the back and the front and sides of the house -- plus a big bed lining the driveway and another big bed lining the fence of the riding arena.

I'm very envious Mary Ann, that you have such a nice large piece of property to grow so many Iris. I look forward to seeing photo's when they are all in bloom. Thumbs up

I don't have much room for iris. I live on a city lot in the suburbs of Detroit and although it is a corner lot, I have over 300 daylilies planted. I have absolutely no grass in my backyard. Now, if I lived about l80 miles north where our small l bedroom cottage is, I would have more room, as the lot size is about l/4 acre. Not sure how well iris would grow in zone 4 though. Would love to get out of the city and move up there.

LOL, Mary Ann, that's why I was looking at the sheer number of rhizomes members were ordering and thinking to myself "How on earth do these people take care of all of these Iris?". I don't know how you all do it. I have approx. 40 Iris and find it very difficult keeping the beds clean and monitored. So kudos to you for your efforts and hard work in keeping your Iris beds in such a state of Health I tip my hat to you.

We live in a small town (village, actually) fairly large lot, and I purchased an adjoining piece of property......it has a garage on it that I wanted for boat storage, plus more 'garden space'.
Thumb of 2016-04-12/crowrita1/3a92e8
this picture looks north, from one corner of our yard, along the street , the white building in the distance is the garage on the other property.these beds are all 8' wide, and vary in length from 16', to 70'....but most are 32' long.

Thumb of 2016-04-12/crowrita1/0a1f9a
then, at the 'corner', there are two more beds, this is the largest (8'X40')
Thumb of 2016-04-12/crowrita1/9b7c0e
this one has gotten longer.....somehow!....since this picture was taken...it grew from 4'X16', to 4'X24'

and I have a little space along the big veggie garden
there are a few more areas that have a 'few' iris, as well.
total bed space is about 2800 square feet....not counting the two beds I am presently constructing

We went from five acres, a 3 year drought and starving gophers to 3/4 of an acre and squirrels so they have tried to dig up what I have planted but most of mine will be in pots for a while. Pots and pots and pots, nodding

All of your property sounds wonderful...big and small Smiling

I live in the suburbs and have a house and barn with a nice backyard that is kinda woodsy. Every side of the house has different kinds of gardens, but the back is where I currently have my irises. It is in a sunny area where some trees needed to be removed. I have an old rock wall in the front where I plan on putting all of my SDBs. I haven't measured it yet, but it's at least 20 ft across. I have enough room right now for all of my irises, but I'm not willing to give up my lawn...yet. I'm planning on buying a farm in the next couple years, hopefully before they need dividing Thumbs up

Ooooh! I'm so jealous of most of you! I have a small city lot and just got one garden bed dug--that cost me $1500! I want another garden bed, but I can't afford it yet. It'll happen, but not right now.

@HEMLADY (Cindy), Your irises will grow just fine 180 miles north of where you are now. I live up in Traverse City and irises and daylilies do just fine-o-fine. I have .46 acre lot...so I have a bit of room to work with.

Good to know. Thanks for that info Ken. Do you happen to have to give them any extra fertilizer in zone 4 to get them growing???
