I did a search on this site, and it didn't find any discussions on Dracaena. Anyone grow them? Lots of houseplant sales going on here right now, and I've seen them priced nicely. I think one of the favorites I've seen is Dracaena Lemon and Lime. Beautiful foliage. Anyone grow this? Any recommendations? Any Dracaena that you do grow and like a lot? What kind of light do they take. When I look on the web, I read everything from low to moderate light on one site, then I go to another site, and it will say they need bright light. What is your experience?

Very cool plants! Easy to care for, no extra humidity requirements except a misting once in a while...perfect for your location!

No direct sunlight. Don't over water.

They're in almost every mall and office up here.

I'll let you know, I broke down and went to Fry's and bought one during my lunch break...lol! I've never seen them anywhere but the store. The one I got is 3 plants in one pot from 2 feet to a little over 3 feet tall, for $11.99. I thought that was a very reasonable price for such huge plants. They were in a 3 gallon pot. I have it outdoors right now, but will move it indoors when our winter freezes start getting closer.

Alan: That is a nice looking Dracaena you bought today and I must say $11.00 is an amazing price! I have a similar one, can't remember what the label said so I'm not sure if it's Dracaena deremensis or D. fragrans or D. reflexa ... I get confused with some of them, LOL. Mine got tall and lanky so I lopped the top off and stuck it in the soil today. It hasn't done well for me probably because it was in a corner of the deck behind a chair and was neglected. I'm hoping to be able to save it.

I've grown Dracaena marginata for years and had a really tall one that ended up bending over when it reached the roof of the screened pool enclosure a few years back ... I finally ended up chopping the top off and then a couple of years ago planted it in the ground. It is one of the easiest Dracaena's in my opinion, it takes a lot of neglect! The plant in my photo's below survived our past two freezing winters and looks ratty right now but it survives still. I'm contemplating digging it back up and putting it in a container again. I have some small ones in containers and some cuttings that rooted and are just putting out a couple of leaves. I wish I had a picture of the big one when it was bending over and growing out sideways but unfortunately when my laptop crashed a year or so ago I lost lots of pictures.

So, I chopped the tops off, and today ... slow growing, but it's growing:

I've had it about 7 years...it lives in a north east facing window, grows well, but very slowly. Its a good plant

I've seen the ones in the pictures above, and love those too!! I wish I had more room for houseplants, I'd have one of each I understand from what I've read, that the lemon and lime does not get as big as some of the others, stays low growing. I hope that's not true, and I could have swore I saw a tall one once at a store. But the price of it was out of this world, so I said no. I'm guessing if it did get that big, it was so expensive, because they also say the Lemon and Lime is a slow grower. I love reading about plants, even when I do end up totally confused when the different websites contradict each other....lol!

Julie, there are two species in the Dracaena Warneckii. The one Lin mentioned and the Lemon and Lime.

I too get very confused with Dracaenas (just like with a lot of other plants, LOL.)

Here it's listed as Dracaena fragrans 'Lemon Lime':

I picked up two of them this summer when I was working at Lowes in the garden center. They had them on special. I planted them in pots outside but I will have to bring them in very soon. They were marked Warneckii and I grew them with asparagus fern and verbena.

Very pretty arrangement Holly! I have a similar Dracaena but when I bought it a couple of years ago it didn't have a label. I think mine came from Wal-Mart garden center ... either there or Home Depot. It was so pretty when I first brought it home. Part of it has died and the remainder is skinny and ratty looking from neglect. I will go out and take a picture when I get back from running errands.

I had to move my Lemon and Lime to the east side of the patio. It heated up here again, and it got a little to much sun on the west side of the patio, and there is light leaf burn on two or three leaves. It's doing much better on the east side, where it only gets very early morning sun. It's on the north side of my house so shaded all day long. Hurry up Arizona fall temps!

I also grow Dracaena's as house plants. I have 2 Dracaena sanderiana commonly called as lucky bamboo. I have one of them for about 5 years, and the other one is a little over 2 years. They do thrive in low light, and I have not put them in soil, just in those gel beads that hold water. From what I have observed, it does not like any fertilizer, still grows, albeit slow, which is fine with me, because I do not want to have a very lanky plant indoors. Here is a photo:





I also have Dracaena Marginata, and in low light, not too much watering required. Just keep it moist. One of them almost did not make it when I left it outdoors in winter,but luckily it is very forgiving once brought back in.

This one made a good comeback, almost killed it outdoors ooops!



This one has always been indoors and really thrives well.


Since the D.marginata is in soil, I also give it some liquid fertilizer. And it does help it grow better.

I have Dracaena 'Warneckii', the same one Julie has, and its coming up to around 4 feet tall....and I've had it for maybe 10 years(?). Doesn't require much, it used to live in a north window and now it lives off to the side of a south window. You just have to water more in the brighter light or the leaves get burn marks on them. Other then that there is no problems and it stays inside year round.

Those Dracena's are really starting to be contagious for me. There are so many different variations showing up as time goes on. This one was a real stunner at the nursery today. It jumped right into my cart. I love the tri-colored leaves, and the tight curled grouping of the leaves. Almost like pom poms on the end of each branch. This plant I believe I have identified as Dracaena reflexa. It was unlabelled :(

LOL - my mother had a plastic dracena for years in the house I grew up in, so I'm naturally biased against them, I'm afraid.

Except for the Lemons and Lime - that could probably bring me to the edge - if I had any room for more plants, that is.
