I started this thread so all of us who enjoy working with polymer clay, and those that wanted to dabble, can post pictures of their creations. I just love showing off the things that I make and I am sure others do to. So, let's get started! Show us those polymer...or any kind of clay for that matter....creations! I'll start off with Clem. The idea for him came to me in the middle of a sleepless night.



And then along came Freaky Freddy (I didn't name him, Clem did. Clem says that anyone that eats bugs is freaky in his book!).



And then there is Pinky. She is not made of Polymer clay, but out of air dry clay. Since I could only find white air dry, I added powdered color to her. It did not mix all that well, so I have dots of more vibrant color in the clay rather than a uniform pink. I kind of like it! Pinky will need some finishing work once she is dry - such as a light sanding to smooth out some rough spots and some lipstick. I think Clem is in love!!

Thanks. I have been having fun with this. I enjoyed working with the air dry clay. It's extremely soft so was challenging trying to mold something that would stay where I put it. A website that I looked at cautioned about sculpting with this stating that it dried very quickly so you had to work fast. Well, hours after putting Pinky together, she is still soft! And I worked so fast to make her because I was concerned the clay would dry before I was finished! Each type of clay has it's own pluses and minuses.

Sally, your new creations are just adorable! I just bought some air dry clay for the first time a few weeks ago, but haven't had time to play with it yet. I'm glad to hear it doesn't get hard as fast as they said it would.

I'll show you my new creation, but it'll probably creep some people out. I'm making some "creature" type things for my store for Halloween. Hope to get them posted this weekend. But here is my favorite. Its really big! 14-1/2" long and weighs over 2 lbs.! My DH named him. He looks kind of evil.....

Not liking this air dry clay so much now. Everywhere that I added clay to my original "blob" to make Pinky, it's developing cracks. The neck started to disconnect from the body and had to use some superglue to hold it on. Hmmmmm....not happy at all!!!

I haven't used air dried clay, Sally, but does it say you can add water to it??

If yes, I can tell you how to get it to stay together.

Sharon, it does not say anything about adding water to it. The dough is extremely soft out of the container. But Pinky is still not completely hard, and it's been about 24 hours! The cracks are developing as it hardens and most cracks are occurring where I added clay to the basic shape.

As it dries, the moisture in it goes away and causes some shrinkage. If you added new to partially dry clay, then the oldest piece keeps drying and shrinking, faster than the new piece does. The two pieces are shrinking away from each other.

I don't know what the liquid is in that air dry clay, but I assume it is something that evaporates.

When working with ceramics you can't add wet pieces to dry pieces for the same reason, but you can add water to scraps of clay to create what's called 'slip', just wet gooey clay, but it acts like a glue and will usually hold new clay to leather dry pieces, but not to completely dry pieces.

To do that, you have to rough up the two pieces you are adding together, sort of scratch them in the areas they will connect, then add the slip to both pieces so it bonds them together.

I suspect with air dry clay, it needs to all be made at the same time, so that all the parts dry at the same time. Might help though if you scratch the parts that are to be bonded then push them together well.

Yes, makes perfect sense...exept that it all was made at the same time. The clay dries extremely slowly so I was actually just adding wet clay to wet clay. It's even cracking where there was no new clay added. Poor Pinky has cracks all over her body!! In the first photo you can see all the cracks in the back.



And this one shows all the cracks in the face.



I think this Pinky is going to end up in the trash and I will make a new one with polymer. Not sure what I will use this air dry clay for now.

Too thick maybe, I don't really know.

Chris, go for it! Your brand of air dry clay may be totally different than mine and a totally different blend. You can't fly if you never flap your wings!!!!
